Jan. 6, 2010
TULSA, Okla. - Tulane's men's basketball team could not make it four -in-row over the Tulsa Golden Hurricane, falling 73-59 in the Conference USA opener on Wednesday night in the Reynolds Center. Asim McQueen led Tulane (5-9, 0-1 C-USA) with 16 points and six rebounds, while David Booker and Kevin Sims each added 12 points. The loss snapped a three-game win streak over the Golden Hurricane. "Our guys really played hard and fought hard, but Tulsa's size and talent was just too much for us tonight," Tulane head coach Dave Dickerson said. "Tulsa is a really good team with good players and we did not have any answers for those guys defensively and rebounding." Tulsa (11-3, 1-0 C-USA), the pre-season favorite to win the conference had four players reach double figures in scoring led by Ben Uzoh's 20 points and a game-high six assists. Justin Hurtt added 14 points, while Jerome Jordan and Bryson Pope each scored 12 in the victory. The Golden Hurricane opened the game scoring the first nine points in the first three minutes and led 12-2 before Tulane used a 10-0 run to tie the score with 12:26 remaining in the half. The Green Wave's run consisted of six free throws and field goals my Booker and McQueen. The game stayed close for the next eight minutes before the Golden Hurricane ended the half scoring 15 of the final 20 points to take a 39-25 lead into the locker room, their largest lead of the half. Tulsa expanded the lead in the second half to as much as 20 and Tulane could not ever get any closer than 11, 52-41, after a Kris Richard 3-pointer with 9:08 left to play. Tulane did reach the free throw line 24 times and knocked down 21 of those attempts for a 87.5 percentage, but managed only 31.0 percent from the floor, including 25.0 percent in the first half. "When you can't score and you are not defending and not rebounding it is going to be a tough night," Dickerson added. "Tulsa made it tough to score and made it tough for us to rebound the ball." Tulsa shot 48.0 percent from the floor, including 52.4 percent in the final 20 minutes. The Golden Hurricane hit just 21 of their 35 free throw attempts. The front court of Bishop Wheatley, Joe Richard and Jordan combined for 23 of Tulsa's 44 rebounds and big-man Steven Idlet came off the bench to add seven boards. Tulane finished the game with 29 rebounds, but did force 16 Golden Hurricane turnovers that led to 23 points.
