Green Wave Cruises to 88-30 Victory Over Morris Brown
Jan. 4, 2003
NEW ORLEANS, La. - Tulane University held Morris Brown to 30 points, the lowest point total by a Wave opponent since 1948, as the Green Wave rolled to an 88-30 victory on Saturday evening at Fogelman Arena. Tulane (7-6), playing its final non-league game of the year, held Morris Brown (1-11) to 16 points in the first half and just 14 in the second half. The Wolverines shot 20.7 percent (12-of-58) from the field and 2-of-20 (10.0 percent) from three-point range. "They were playing without some key guys who have started for them this year," Tulane coach Shawn Finney said. "Give them credit, they played hard right to the end. They are in a tough situation right now." Morris Brown was playing without three key players in the game, but regardless of its lineup Tulane found ways to score. "I was pleased with the way we came to play," Finney continued. "Everyone on the team contributed for us tonight. I think we are playing our best basketball since I have been here. This has been four solid games in a row for us." The high scorer for the Wave was junior Ivan Pjevcevic who tallied a career-best 20 points, including four three-pointers, in just 14 minutes of action. Senior Nick Sinville had his way inside, connecting on 7-of-8 shots from the field and finishing with 15 points. Waitari Marsh also had double figures with 11 points. Tulane connected on 33-of-60 shots (55.0 percent), including 12-of-19 (52.6 percent) three-pointers. In addition, for the third straight game, Tulane turned the ball over just 10 times. The 58-point margin of victory was the third-largest in school history. The last team to score less than 30 points was Texas A&M, which tallied 28 points on Dec. 18, 1948.
Both teams opened the game cold from the field, as the Green Wave held a 7-5 lead 5:10 into the game. However, a pair of Marsh three-pointers jump-started an 18-4 Wave run, pushing the margin to 16 with 4:49 to go in the half. A three-pointer by Morris Brown's Anthony Adams slowed Tulane a bit, but only until Pjevcevic erupted.
Marcus Kinzer (career-high eight assists) fed the 6-11 sharp-shooter for an 18-foot jumper and a 29-12 lead. After a Wolverine layup by Larry Washington, Pjevcevic connected on his first three-pointer of the game. Washington and Kinzer traded buckets to make it 34-14 with one minute remaining, but Pjevcevic took back-to-back passes from Kinzer and canned three-pointers to close the half with Tulane on top, 40-16. The second half was more of the same as Tulane scored the first nine points of the stanza to set the tone once again. Brandon Brown was the only player on the Wave team to play more than 20 minutes in the contest as 12 different players scored points. Junior George Brown added a season-high nine points and a career-best seven rebounds. Tulane opens Conference USA play on Tuesday evening, playing at Memphis. The Wave returns home the next Tuesday, Jan. 14, hosting nationally-ranked Marquette at Fogelman Arena. |
