Richard's Homecoming and Double Double Spoiled By Lamar in 70-67 Loss
Jan. 2, 2010
BEAUMONT, Texas -Tulane's Kris Richard's double double performance in his return to his hometown was spoiled by the host Lamar Cardinals on Saturday night, 70-67, in the Montagne Center. Richard, playing in Beaumont for the first time since high school, led Tulane(5-9) with 15 points and a career-high 12 rebounds for the first double double of his career, but the Green Wave could not overcame Lamar (7-7) in a back and forth game. Kevin Sims finished with a game-high 19 points and connected on 10 of 13 from the free throw, but missed the second of a two-shot foul with 0:02 left on the clock that would have tied the game at 68-68. Lamar's Anthony Miles pulled down the rebound and hit both of his free throws a second later to put the Cardinals up 70-67. Richard's 3-quarter court shot was not good in attempt to tie the game at the buzzer. "The guys that were on the floor at the end really did a good job," Tulane head coach Dave Dickerson said. "Kris Richard stepped up with 15 points and 12 rebounds and had a hand in play after play to try to give us a chance to win. We were not great from the field, but boy did we get a lot of second chance points that really gave ourselves a chance to win. Lamar just made two or three more plays than we did tonight." Tulane was able to mount a comeback after trailing by as many as nine in the first half and eight with 11:15 left in the second half. The Green Wave fought back from a 22-13 deficit with 7:19 left in the opening half by using an 11-1 run to take a 24-23 lead with 3:31 remaining in the half after a Jordan Callahan jumper. Lamar used a 6-0 run to retake the lead before A lay-up by Asim McQueen and a 3-pointer by Richard cut the Lamar lead to 33-32 at the break. A lay-up by Terrance Beasley gave Tulane a shorted lived second-half lead, 38-37, with16:31 left in the game. Lamar then scored 15 of the next 21 points to take a 52-44 lead with 11:15 remaining. Tulane put together an 8-0 run with field goals by Richard and Booker and four free throws by Sims to tie the game, 52-52 with 7:34 left. A 3-point play by Kendall Timmons a few minutes later gave Tulane a 56-55 lead, but that was the last time the Green Wave would lead. Booker finished with nine points and six rebounds for Tulane, while McQueen had seven points and three boards. Tulane shot just 34.5 percent from the floor in the game, including just four of 19 from 3-point range. Lamar shot 47.9 percent from the floor, including 54.2 in the second half. The Cardinals edged out Tulane, 36-35, on the boards, but Tulane grabbed 15 offensive rebounds and turned them into 17 second chance points. Tulane ended its non-conference schedule with a 5-8 record and will open the Conference USA schedule on Wednesday at Tulsa for a 7 p.m. CST tip. GAME NOTES
