Black Squad Tops Green, 2-1, in Game Four of Fall World Series
Nov. 7, 2009
NEW ORLEANS - Redshirt sophomore 3B Rob Segedin turned in a two-for-two day with a home run and a walk as the Black Squad picked up a 2-1 win in game four of Tulane's Fall World Series. The Black Attack picked up the game-winning run in the sixth on a double steal attempt by Segedin and sophomore 2B Matt Ryan. With the five game series already 3-0 in favor of the Black Team, head coach Rick Jones turned game four into a skins contest, awarding a point to the team which won each inning, rolling over the point if the two teams tied. The winner of the overall seven inning game also earned one point. Rosters remained the same for the contest. Segedin gave the Black Squad a point in the first, and a 1-0 lead in the game, with a solo home run off Green Team starter Preston Claiborne with two out in the bottom of the inning. Each inning was scoreless until the fifth, when the Mean Green picked up a run to earn four points. Freshman SS Brennan Middleton opened the fifth inning by working out a walk, with ball four sailing to the backstop. Middleton hustled down to second base, beating the throw to put himself in scoring position for Team Green. After a groundout from freshman left fielder Greg Miller advanced him to third, Middleton came in to score on another wild pitch.
In the bottom of the sixth, Claiborne got a pair of quick outs, but Ryan singled to center field for a two-out hit, and Segedin followed with a single to right to put runners on the corners for the Black Squad. On a two-one count, Segedin made an attempt to steal second, but pulled up short of the bag when Ryan broke home on the throw down to Middleton. Middleton chased Segedin back to towards first, while Ryan crossed the plate with the go-ahead run. The play made a winner out of RHP Drew Zizinia, who tossed two scoreless innings out of the pen to maintain a 0.00 ERA this fall. The junior allowed two hits and a walk with one strikeout. Black Squad starting RHP Robby Broach pitched five innings, allowing just two hits and two walks while striking out seven in the no decision. Claiborne was saddled with the loss for Team Green despite 5.2 innings of four-hit ball, with three walks and three punch outs. Freshman RHP Ross Hardy pitched 1.1 innings allowing one hit and a pair of walks. "It was really another day where it was pitching-dominant," Jones said. "I thought Robby Broach today was really good today. He had all three pitches going, his breaking ball had a lot of depth. It's really encouraging to see Robby finish up the fall the way he did today. Preston Claiborne had another good day also. To see Drew Zizinia have a real good sixth and then pitch out of a jam in the seventh was encouraging to me in two ways: his stuff to begin with and also to be able to do something that in the past has given him some issues was encouraging." Ryan and sophomore 1B Jamie Bruno were each one-for-three on the day, with Bruno picking up a double. Freshman RF Bowen Woodson was on base twice, with a walk and a single on the afternoon. Freshman DH Gunner Wright paced Team Green with a two-for-three day at the plate, picking up a pair of singles. Freshman 3B Quinn Pippin was one-for-three with a single to increase his average to a World Series leading .455. "We've pitched so well, but we're nowhere near where we need to be from an offensive standpoint. Defensively, very sound," Jones continued. "But with the exception of Rob Segedin, it hasn't been a whole lot of offense to talk about. Quinn Pippin today had another hit and looked good swinging. Gunner Wright was an encouraging thing to see. Jamie Bruno had a double today. It was good to see Jamie because he'd struggled so much and we need him to get it going." "But we need to get it going offensively. We still have one more day to see if some guys can take some steps." With a four-point fifth inning, the Green Team cut into the skins game deficit, and trails 6-4. The Black Squad earned one point each in the first and sixth innings, one point for the game four win, and carried three points into the contest for its 3-0 series lead. Tulane will wrap the 2009 Fall World Series with Sunday's game five at approximately 1:45 p.m. The game will feature a rematch of game one's starters, as the Green Team sends junior RHP Nick Pepitone (3.60 ERA, 2 K in 5.0 IP in a game one no decision) against the Black Squad's freshman RHP Alex Byo (3.60 ERA, 7 K in 5.0 IP in a game one no decision). POST-GAME QUOTES "I still am very concerned about where we are offensively. We've pitched so well, but we're nowhere near where we need to be from an offensive standpoint. Defensively, very sound. But with the exception of Rob Segedin, it hasn't been a whole lot of offense to talk about. Quinn Pippin today had another hit and looked good swinging. Gunner Wright was an encouraging thing to see. Jamie Bruno had a double today. It was good to see Jamie because he'd struggled so much and we need him to get it going." "But we need to get it going offensively. We still have one more day to see if some guys can take some steps. We have some freshmen right now, position player wise, that are getting overwhelmed a little bit. We knew that was going to be the case and now we start finding out a little bit about the toughness of some guys and how they handle those things. Now we have one more day to go before we go into our exit meetings and start talking about where guys need to get better for spring." |
