Baseball's Warren McFadden Named Freshman All-American
June 8, 2006 NEW ORLEANS, La. - Tulane University baseball standout Warren McFadden picked up yet another honor for an outstanding 2006 season as the redshirt-freshman right fielder from Plantation, Fla., was named to the Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America Team on Wednesday by Collegiate Baseball newspaper. The Freshman All-America honor comes on the heels of the 2006 season that saw McFadden claim Conference USA Freshman of the Year, first-team All C-USA and C-USA All-Freshman Team recognition after leading the Green Wave with a .382 batting average (91-for-238) and 24 doubles. McFadden's honor marks the 13th time a Green Wave student-athlete earned Freshman All-America distinction from Collegiate Baseball, and also gives Tulane at least one Freshman All-American for the seventh time in the last eight seasons. "Warren is certainly deserving of this honor," Tulane head coach Rick Jones said. "He hit third in the lineup for a regional final club and his numbers bear out his value to the team. Warren is also an outstanding outfielder, he ran the bases well, and he took the team approach on a daily basis. We're really happy for him." McFadden played in all 64 games as a redshirt-freshman, including 60 starts in right field and three in left. In addition to leading Tulane in batting average and doubles, he ranked second on the club in RBI (50) and on-base percentage (.457), third in runs (53), total bases (122) and slugging percentage (.513) and fourth in stolen bases (tied with six). He is tied for the C-USA lead in doubles and ranks second in the league in batting average, fourth in hits and fifth in on-base percentage, all of which stand as top marks among C-USA rookies. McFadden paced Tulane with 32 multiple-hit games, including a 4-for-5 game against Southern Miss (May 13). He also finished tied for fourth on the team with 10 multi-RBI games, including four RBI against Jackson St. (March 28) and Stephen F. Austin (April 23). He had a 21-game hit streak from April 2-May 7, which is tied for second longest in TU history, when he hit .467 (39-82) with 10 doubles, a home run and 21 RBI. McFadden was named C-USA Hitter of the Week and to the College Baseball Foundation Honor Roll on May 8 after hitting .500 (8-for-16) with two doubles and three RBI in a 4-0 week. McFadden is one of six Conference USA rookies to claim Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America honors, joining the Southern Miss trio of first baseman Michael Ewing, shortstop Brian Dozier and outfielder Luke Adkins, Rice outfielder Aaron Luna and Houston utility athlete Luis Flores. He is also one of five freshmen from the state of Louisiana to earn the honor, joining Southern first baseman Calvin Anderson, Louisiana-Monroe shortstop Ben Soigner, McNeese State shortstop Shon Landry and Louisiana Tech outfielder Jericho Jones. McFadden and the Green Wave went 43-21 in 2006, finishing third in the C-USA regular-season standings with a 15-9 league record, and advanced to the NCAA Regional Championship game for the third consecutive year. He is slated to begin summer ball play later this month with the Falmouth Commodores of the Cape Cod League.
