June 1, 2012
NEW ORLEANS - It is an honor bestowed on a select few individuals in college baseball and two of the 33 recipients on the 2012 Capital One Academic All-America baseball team as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) came from the Tulane baseball squad. Senior Jeremy Schaffer earned second team honors after a distinguished career on the field and in the classroom, graduating with his degree in Finance this spring, and junior Brandon Boudreaux claimed a spot on the third team with a 3.66 GPA in management.
The duo becomes the first Tulane teammates to earn the Academic All-America honors in the same season in school history. They are the eighth and ninth players in school history to earn Academic All-America honors on the diamond. It's also just the second time in TU history that multiple players have garnered Academic All-America honors in the same academic year, joining Neal Comarda (Baseball) and Gerry Sheridan (Football) who did so in 1978.
Boudreaux and Schaffer were the only two Conference USA student-athletes named to the 2012 Academic All-America team.
Adding one more honor to his mantel, Schaffer ended his Tulane career as one of the most decorated players in school history and sits among the school's all-time leaders in a multitude of statistical categories. The Bellaire, Texas native graduated from Tulane's Freeman School of Business this spring with a degree in finance and was named to both the Conference USA All-Academic Team and the CoSIDA Academic All-District squad this season.
On top of being a standout in the classroom, Schaffer was a mainstay behind the plate for the Olive and Blue over the past four seasons. In four years he started 217 games - eighth most in school history - and set career-highs in seven offensive categories during his senior season. Schaffer ranks eighth in career home runs (41) and RBI (194) in the Tulane charts, while ranking among the top-20 in Conference USA history on both lists. His 59 doubles are ninth all-time at Tulane and he stands among the top-25 on seven other major offensive scales.

This season, Boudreaux set career-highs in 13 offensive categories and ranked among the top-ten in Conference USA in nine offensive categories when the regular season ended. The left-handed hitter ended his season with a .426 on-base and .531 slugging percentage, 110 total bases, 14 doubles and 33 walks - all ranking among the C-USA leaders - and led the conference with 56 runs scored. He also stole 10 bases and drove in a career-high 36 RBIs. In his career, Boudreaux is among the top-30 in games started (28th, 157) and walk (30th, 89) and is 33rd with 120 runs scored and 40th with 176 hits in his three season on campus.
The Academic All-America ballot is comprised of each Academic All-District squad and is voted on by the members of CoSIDA. To be eligible, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached at least sophomore athletic and academic standing at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.
