Five Baseball Standouts Named To All-Conference USA Teams
May 25, 2004 HOUSTON, Texas - A quintet of Tulane baseball standouts were named to the 2004 All-Conference USA teams, the league office announced Tuesday on the eve of the C-USA Tournament at Cougar Field in Houston, Texas. Junior outfielder Matt Barket and sophomore southpaw J.R. Crowel were named to the first team, sophomore two-way standout Brian Bogusevic and senior right-hander Cory Hahn claimed second-team honors, and rookie right-hander Daniel Latham earned a spot on the All-Freshman Team. Barket started all 55 games for the Green Wave as a junior, and led the team in batting average (.395), hits (83), total bases (123, tied), on-base percentage (.474) and stolen bases (12) while ranking third in C-USA in batting average, fifth in hits and on-base percentage, ninth in stolen bases, and 11th in RBI. He is tied for the team lead with 26 multiple-hit games, including four 3-hit and four 4-hit games, and also has 14 multiple-RBI games, including a pair of 4 RBI outings. Barket's batting average never dipped below .300 at any point in 2004, and he reached base safely in 51 of 55 games via hit or walk. Crowel, meanwhile, started all 14 of his appearances in 2004 and led the Green Wave in ERA (3.35) and opponent batting average (tied with a .261 mark) while ranking second in wins (7), innings pitched (83.1) and strikeouts (66). He ranks third in C-USA in ERA, ninth in strikeouts, tied for 11th in opponent batting average, and tied for 12th in wins. Crowel tallied five or more strikeouts seven times, including two nine-K games and a career-best 10 punchouts vs. UMBC on Feb. 21. Bogusevic was named the utility athlete on the C-USA second team after hitting .336 with 13 doubles, four triples, nine RBI and 60 RBI at the plate while going 8-5 with a 3.68 ERA, 78 strikeouts and a .265 opponent batting average in 93.0 innings of work from the mound. Hahn, meanwhile, claimed his first league honor after going 8-2 with a 4.10 ERA in 79.0 innings of work. More impressively, Hahn has a has a 5.73 strikeout-to-walk ratio with 63 strikeouts and just 11 walks, and a 7.17 strikeout-per-nine inning average. He tallied five or more strikeouts six times, including seven Ks in his first start of the year and a career-best 13 punches in 8.0 innings vs. Charlotte. Latham earned All-Freshman Team honors after becoming one of the most consistent arms out of the bullpen as a rookie. He Appeared in 23 games as a true freshman, including a start vs. Saint Louis on May 15, and tied for the team lead in saves (5) and opponent batting average (.261) while ranking second in appearances (23), and fifth in ERA (4.23), innings pitched (61.2) and strikeouts (51).
