Freshman third baseman Hunter Hope was named to the Conference USA All-Freshman Team on Tuesday
May 20, 2014
IRVING, Texas - One day after the league offices honored a Tulane baseball player for his work in the classroom, Conference USA announced that fellow Green Wave baseball player Hunter Hope was named to the league's All-Freshman Team.
The team was voted on by the league's coaches and SIDs, as well as a designated media member that covers each program. The coaches and SIDs were not allowed to vote for their own players.
Hope was the Green Wave's top hitter on the year, batting .269 with 53 hits. The Jupiter, Fla., native was the only Green Wave player this season to start every game of the season at one position, as he manned third base in all 52 games.
Of the aforementioned 53 hits, ten were doubles and three were home runs. His three home runs were second on the team, and his ten doubles were good for third. Hope collected 25 RBI on the year, also good for second on the squad.
Hope put together 14 multi-hit games and six multi-RBI contests, both good for second on the team on the season. He did notch the Green Wave's longest hitting streak of the season, as he collected base hits in 11 straight games from Feb. 15 to March 7, hitting .362 with five doubles and two home runs with 12 RBI across that period.
In just his second Conference USA game of his career, Hope went 4-for-6 with two runs, a double, a home run and four RBI as he helped the Green Wave defeat Louisiana Tech 16-3.
The rookie was clutch for the Green Wave on the season, as he delivered three game-winning, walk-off hits. On April 15, he brought fellow freshman Grant Brown home on a single in the bottom of the tenth in a victory over McNeese State. Just ten days later, Hope notched a walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the 12th in a 5-1 win over Wichita State.
Hope closed out the Green Wave's season on May 17 with a walk-off RBI-single to score Stephen Alemais in a win against FIU.
Hope becomes the 28th Green Wave baseball player to earn C-USA All-Freshman Team honors. Of the previous 27, 17 have gone on to earn Freshman All-American honors during the same season.
