IRVING, Texas - Tulane baseball sophomore outfielder and designated hitter Richard Carthon was honored by Conference USA on Monday, as he was named to the All-Academic Team for his efforts in the classroom.
In order to be recognized, a student-athlete must hold a cumulative grade point average of 3.2, be of at least sophomore academic standing and be a starter or key reserve for their team. The team was voted on by the league's coaches.
Carthon, a native of Shreveport, La., is the youngest recipient of the honor this year, as he is the lone sophomore on the squad. Majoring in legal studies, Carthon has maintained a 3.66 cumulative GPA.
In 2014, Carthon was one of only three Green Wave baseball players to start in all 52 games on the season. He was third on the team in batting average, hitting at a clip of .258, while also placing third in total hits with 48. He led the team in on-base percentage (.367), runs (28), and hit by pitch (16). He tied for second on the squad with four sacrifice hits, while also placing second in stolen bases with eight and in walks with 17.
Carthon is a two-time honoree of the Conference USA Commissioner's Honor Roll and also earned the C-USA Academic Medal during his freshman season.
The other honorees to the All-Academic Team are: Corbin Shive (Charlotte, graduate student, 4.00 GPA, Masters in accounting), Drew Reynolds (ECU, junior, 3.52 GPA, physical education), Tyler Rocklein (FAU, senior, 3.60 GPA, exercise science), Aramis Garcia (FIU, junior, 3.78 ERA, sports and fitness), Mike Gomez (FIU, junior, 3.79 GPA, sports and fitness), Stephen Gandy (Louisiana Tech, redshirt senior, 4.00 GPA Masters in business administration), Dean Ali (Old Dominion, senior, 3.61 GPA, electrical engineering), John Clay Reeves (Rice, junior, 3.40 GPA, sport management), Tyler Mims (UAB, redshirt junior, 3.92 GPA, industrial distribution) and John Bormann (UTSA, junior, 3.76 GPA, business).
