Jake Gautreau Named C-USA Player Of The Year

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Tulane sophomore Jake Gautreau was named the Conference USA Player of the Year, as well as an All-Conference USA First Team selection, the league office announced Tuesday. Five additional Green Wave players received All-Conference USA honors.

Gautreau is Tulane's triple crown leader, pacing the Green Wave in hitting (.395), home runs (15) and RBI (65). He ranks second, third and first in those respective categories among all Conference USA players. Gautreau is the first sophomore to earn the league's Player of the Year honors.

Senior left-handed pitcher Jared Berkowitz was named to the All-Conference USA First Team. Berkowitz is currently fourth in the nation in wins with 12. Through 102 2/3 innings of work he has recorded a 3.33 ERA with 90 strike outs and 35 walks. Berkowitz has thrown four complete games including two shutouts.

Second baseman James Jurries also received first team honors. On the season, Jurries is hitting .358 with 11 home runs, 18 doubles and 45 RBI. He is currently on a 14 game hitting streak. In C-USA play Jurries is hitting a .446.

Designated hitter Steve Shirley was named to the All-Conference USA Second Team. Shirley is hitting .365 with nine home runs and 18 doubles.

James Burgess and Nick Bourgeios represented Tulane on the Conference USA All-Freshman Team. Burgess is hitting .299 with 15 RBI, while Bourgeois has a 4.35 ERA with 30 strikeouts in 20 2/3 innings, and is hitting .293.

Tulane takes on UAB its first game of the 2000 Conference USA Championship Wednesday morning at 8:00 CST.
