IRVING, Texas - Tulane baseball junior Andrew Garner was honored by Conference USA on Monday after a stellar week at the plate - including a contest in which he hit for the cycle - as he was named Hitter of the Week, the league announced.
Later in the day, the junior was honored by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association as the Louisiana Hitter of the Week.
The Lake Jackson, Texas, native went 9-for-15 (.600) over three games, including his record-setting performance on Saturday where he went 5-for-5 with two doubles, a triple, a home run while tallying a walk and seven RBIs as he hit for the cycle. He became the first Green Wave player to hit for the cycle since Tulane legend Michael Aubrey accomplished the feat against LSU in 2000.
The seven RBIs that Garner notched tied him for the second-most in one game. His name will now be placed in the Tulane record books alongside Tookie Spann, Keith Graffagnini, Mark Hamilton and Jake Gautreau - who collected seven RBIs on two separate occasions.
"When you have the kind of week that he had is just special," said Tulane baseball head coach Rick Jones. "When you hit for the cycle, which is so difficult to do, and to have all of the RBIs he had and the multi-hit games against a very good UCF pitching staff is outstanding. He had a real special weekend."
In the three games against UCF, Garner collected four doubles, tying him for the team lead on the season with 15. He also sits tied for third in the league in the category. He slugged 1.200 over the weekend, and he owned an on-base percentage of .625, as well.
Garner is in the midst of an 11-game hitting streak, and he has recorded six-straight multi-hit games.
After his outstanding weekend, the junior raised his batting average by 27 points, as is now second on the Green Wave squad with a .297 batting average.
Garner becomes the first Green Wave player to earn a weekly award outright from the conference this season, as redshirt sophomore Tony Rizzotti was named Co-Pitcher of the Week after the first weekend of the season.
The Green Wave will host UAB this Thursday, Friday and Saturday for the final three games of the regular season.
