Schaffer Named to Johnny Bench Award Watch List
May 4, 2009
WICHITA, KAN.- The Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission has named Tulane freshman catcher Jeremy Schaffer to the official watch list for the 2009 Coleman Company-Johnny Bench Award delivered by AT&T and Papa John's Pizza, along with five additional catchers. 53 catchers from across the country were nominated for the award, given annually to the top Division I collegiate catcher. Schaffer is in the midst of a stellar rookie season, currently batting .333 (56-168) with 47 RBI, ranking eighth among Conference USA hitters. The club's everyday catcher, Schaffer has also posted a .583 slugging percentage, tacking on seven doubles and a triple in addition to his 11 home runs. Behind the dish, the Bellaire, Texas native has thrown out 13 would-be base stealers, ranking him third in Conference USA. Schaffer is the first true freshman to handle the majority of the catching duties at Tulane since All-American Chad Sutter, who now serves as the Green Wave's associate head coach. The watch list will be narrowed down to ten semifinalists, whom will be announced May 14, 2009. Statistics will be compiled on each of the semifinalists and sent to the national voting panel at the end of May for a vote to determine the three finalists. The finalists will be announced June 3, 2009 prior to the NCAA Super Regionals and Major League Baseball Draft. A final vote among the national committee will occur during the College World Series. All finalists will be brought to Wichita and the winner will be announced at the 12th Annual Greater Wichita Sports Banquet on June 26, 2009.
