NEW ORLEANS - Senior Preston Claiborne gave the Tulane Baseball team a solid effort out of the bullpen in the opener of a double-header versus Towson and freshman Alex Byo tossed six innings in his game two start to help the Green Wave to a 10-5 and 9-3 double-header sweep of the Tigers on Saturday at Green Field at Turchin Stadium.
"They played us tough last night and played us really tough again today," said Tulane head coach Rick Jones. "We got some good middle relief pitching in the first game from Preston and Nick was really good in the save situation. In the second game, we came out with a lot of energy on defense, ran some balls down and made some really good defensive plays that had we not made them, it would have changed that game. I also thought that Alex Byo gave us a good, solid performance in his first career start."
The first game was played close to the cuff until an eighth inning outburst from the Tulane offense opened up the margin of victory. The Green Wave never trailed in the contest, but the game was tied at three runs apiece heading to the bottom of the fourth.
With two runners on and one out, Blake Crohan drove in a run with a ground out and Rob Segedin singled to push the second run across the plate for Tulane. Crohan doubled in another run in the sixth, extending the game one lead to 6-3. Claiborne would relieve starting pitcher Matt Petiton after just 3.2 innings of work and toss the next four frames with just two runs allowed to claim his first win of the season. Towson would score single runs in the seventh and eighth versus Claiborne, before Nick Pepitone would come on to throw the final 1.2 innings scoreless to collect his first save of the season. In game two, Byo threw an effective six innings, allowing just one run on six hits with two strikeouts and three walks. The offense staked the rookie to an early lead and added to that to help Byo claim his first career victory on the mound. The scoring started with the first two batters of the game for the Olive and Blue, as Nick Boullosa doubled to start the game and Matt Ryan drove him home with a single in the next at bat. A three run second inning opened up the lead and a single run in the third on a Brennan Middleton sacrifice fly pushed Tulane out to a 5-0 lead. Towson scored their lone run in the fourth, but Segedin led off the fifth inning with a solo home run to right field and two more runs in the frame added to the lead. Cannizaro drove in the final run of the nightcap with a single in the sixth and Kyle McKenzie combined with Nate Fury to close the game out. McKenzie allowed two runs in the inning, but Fury came on the record the final out and preserve the twinbill sweep with a 9-3 decision. Five Green Wave players collected multiple hits in game two, while Ryan drove in a pair of runs and Boudreaux scored three times. Segedin extended his hitting streak to a career-best 13 games with hits in both contests, while Cannizaro has now hit in 14 straight games. Tulane improves to 9-6 overall on the season and will cap the four game series with a 1:00 contest versus Towson on Sunday, March 14. The Olive and Blue will send Robby Broach to the mound to square off with Tyler Austin for the 1-13 Tigers.
