NEW ORLEANS - Tulane baseball's Ian Gibaut was named the Louisiana Sports Writers Association Pitcher of the Week today for his performances on the mound last week for the Green Wave, the organization announced today.
The freshman from Houston was essential for the Green Wave during their three wins last week, as he notched a win, two saves and seven strikeouts in 7.2 innings of relief.
"He played a major role for us this past week," said Tulane baseball head coach Rick Jones. "He is very deserving of this."
On Tuesday against Northwestern State, Gibaut was one of three freshman pitchers to hold the Demons scoreless on the afternoon. In the Greenies 3-0 win, Gibaut pitched 1.2 innings, striking out three and earning his first collegiate save in the process.
Coming in to close out a 3-2 victory on Friday against High Point, Gibaut pitched an inning and struck out the final batter to collect his second save in as many appearances.
Two days later, Gibaut was used extensively out of the bullpen during Tulane's 11-10 victory in 12 innings over High Point. Gibaut made his longest appearance on the season - 5.0 innings - striking out three and earning his first collegiate win. He also only held High Point to three hits through his 5.0 innings of service after the Panthers notched 15 through the first seven innings.
"We had to use him more than we wanted to on Sunday, but he pitched effectively, and got the job done for us," added Jones.
On the season, Gibaut has made seven appearances, tied for fifth in Conference USA, and he has been on the mound at the end of five Green Wave contests - good for a tie at third place in the conference. Also, his two saves are tied for sixth in the league.
In 12.1 innings during seven appearances, Gibaut has posted a 2.19 ERA, walking only five while striking out 12.
The Green Wave will return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Hammond to face Southeastern Louisiana at 6pm CST. Both teams will come to Greer Field at Turchin Stadium for a 6:30pm CST tilt on Wednesday night. Both contests will be broadcast on 106.1 The Ticket.
