March 7, 2011
NEW ORLEANS - Alex Byo made a pair of starts last week on the mound for the Tulane baseball team and after holding Northwestern State and Ole Miss scoreless, the sophomore was named the Louisiana Sports Writers Association Pitcher of the Week.
Byo got the start on Tuesday and limited the Demons to just three base runners in seven scoreless innings of work. The right-hander allowed just two hits, walking one batter, and struck out five in his first start of the 2011 campaign. Byo left the game with a 2-0 lead, but NSU scored twice in the eighth and he received a no decision in the contest.
Then, on Sunday, Byo made his second start of the week at nationally-ranked Ole Miss and scattered four hits over five innings of work. He didn't walk a batter and fanned four Rebel hitters in the scoreless outing. He left the game with a 3-0 lead and picked up his first win of the season.
So far in 2011, Byo has appeared in four contests - with two starts - and has allowed just one earned run in 15.1 innings of work. He has struck out 14 and walked just four, while limiting opposing hitters to a .228 batting average.
Tulane (9-3) will return to the Turf at Turchin this weekend when they host Wichita State (9-2) for a three game series. The three-game set will start on Friday (March 11) evening at 6:30 inside Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.
