NEW ORLEANS, La. - One day after helping the Green Wave put the finishing touches on a perfect 4-0 week, Tulane University baseball standout Nate Simon claimed Conference USA Co-Hitter of the Week, the league announced Monday.
A sophomore from Duvall, Wash., Simon earned the honor after hitting .500 (6-for-12) with a 1.000 slugging percentage courtesy of two doubles and two home runs, while driving in six runs and sporting a .556 on-base percentage. He had at least one hit and one RBI in all four games, and provided the game-winning hit in two of the Green Wave's victories. The honor is the first of Simon's career, and the first for a Green Wave position player in 2007.
"Simon has had a very good week and a very big impact on our success this week - both at LSU and over the weekend," Tulane head coach Rick Jones said. "For a club that needs offense without sacrificing defense, Simon's provided both, and that's a positive."
Simon opened and closed the week with home runs, marking the first two round trippers of his career. He was 3-for-4 with a double, a home run and three RBI in Tuesday's 8-3 win over arch-rival LSU in Baton Rouge. Simon followed that up by posting a pair of hits in Friday's 5-4, extra-inning win over Wright State, including the game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the 13th.
On Saturday, Simon was 1-for-2 with a pair of walks and he closed out the week by going 2-for-4 with a double and a home run in the Green Wave's 4-1 series finale victory over the Raiders.
Simon started the first two games of the week as the team's designated hitter before taking over center field duties on Saturday and Sunday. In his outfield post, Simon recorded seven putouts in as many chances, including a career-best five on Sunday.
For the season, Simon is hitting .417 (10-for-24) with a .750 slugging percentage and eight RBI. All four of his extra-base hits came during Simon's award-winning week, and he has a .517 on-base percentage on the strength of four walks and one hit by pitch.
Simon and the Green Wave return to action on Tuesday, March 6, when they take on McNeese State at 6:30 p.m. at Zephyr Field. The contest against the Cowboys is one of five games Tulane home games over the next seven days as the Green Wave will play host to UNC-Asheville on Wednesday and take on Loyola-Marymount over the weekend.
