A solo shot into left field by catcher Nick Herz insured a 7-6 Tulane victory over Southwestern Louisiana in the final game of the Winn-Dixie Showdown on Sunday. Green Wave shortstop Andy Cannizaro and catcher Chad Sutter were named to the Winn-Dixie Showdown All-Tournament Team.
Tulane scored six of its seven runs in the first three innings, beginning with an RBI double by senior outfielder Jason Sparks in the first inning. Sparks, who recorded his first multi-hit game of the season, went 3-for-4, scored one run and hit his first triple of the year.
USL mounted a comeback, pulling to within one, before Tulane halted the rally in the top of the fifth. After being hit by a pitch in his first two at bats, Herz recorded his first homer of the season off USL'a Scott Dohmann.
Green Wave second baseman James Jurries went 2-for-4, and recorded two runs and two RBI.
Senior LHP Raul Echeverz picked up his first win of the season for Tulane, while RHP Henry Bonilla chalked up his first save.
Tulane's first home game of the season is scheduled for Wednesday, February 24th, at Turchin Stadium as the Green Wave plays host to in-state rival Nicholls State at 6:30 p.m.
