NEW ORLEANS, La. - Three days after striking out a season-best 11 batters, Tulane University baseball standout Sean Morgan was named Conference USA Pitcher of the Week, the league announced Monday.
A junior right-hander from Sugar Land, Texas, Morgan did not allow an earned run in 7.0 solid innings while scattering five singles and not issuing a single walk. The C-USA weekly honor is Morgan's first of the 2007 season and third of his career.
Morgan was dominant from the start in Friday's 5-1 win over the Ospreys as he fanned the first three batters of the ballgame and faced just four more then the minimum during his time on the mound. The lone base runner he allowed in the first three innings reached on a strikeout-wild pitch in the game's second at-bat, and Morgan allowed multiple-base runners in the same inning just twice.
In addition to starting on the mound on Friday, Morgan started as the team's designated hitter on Saturday and Sunday when he posted a single, a double, four RBI and a sacrifice bunt.
The 11 strikeouts tied for the second most of Morgan's collegiate career - his career high of 13 came against Stephen F. Austin on April 21, 2006 - and three of his punches were of the looking variety.
In two starts on the young 2007 season, Morgan sports a sparkling 0.64 ERA after allowing just one earned run in 14.0 innings of work. He features a 12.86 strikeout-per-nine average and a 20-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio. He also leads the Green Wave staff with a .192 opponent batting average.
With 11 Ks Friday night against UNF, Morgan now has 187 strikeouts for his career and is just 52 away from cracking Tulane's Top 10 career strikeout listing.
Morgan and the Green Wave return to action on Friday, Feb. 23, when they travel to Los Angeles, Calif., to open a three-game weekend slate against Southern Cal. Season tickets as well as tickets to next weekend's series against the Trojans remain for sale through the Tulane Athletics Ticket Office and can be picked up in person on the first floor of the James W. Wilson, Jr. Center, via the internet at www.TulaneGreenWave.com or over the phone at 504-861-WAVE.
