Green Wave Win Texas State Tournament

Feb. 17, 2013

SAN MARCOS, Texas - Tulane's baseball squad was crowned the champion of the Texas State Tournament late Sunday evening, after going 2-1 in games over the weekend at Bobcat Stadium in San Marcos, Texas.

Sam Houston State - the only winless team going into the last day of the tournament - defeated Texas State on Sunday afternoon, 10-9, to give Tulane the championship. Had Texas State won, they would have been declared the winners of their own tournament.

Tulane defeated Sam Houston State on Friday night, 2-0, behind redshirt sophomore Tony Rizzotti's one-hit, complete game shutout. The Green Wave then collected 14 hits in a 6-4 win against Missouri State this afternoon. Yesterday, they dropped their only contest of the weekend as they fell to tournament-host Texas State, 2-0.

Texas State and Missouri State finished the weekend 2-1, while Sam Houston State posted a record of 1-2.

"We played three outstanding clubs that are expected to finish at the top of their leagues," stated Tulane head coach Rick Jones. "It was a good weekend for us. Obviously, our lack of execution hurt us Saturday, but we came back today and executed well. All three days, our pitching was really strong, and that is what allowed us to win a tournament that featured such great clubs."

Tulane will host their first home game at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium on Tuesday against Southeastern Louisiana. The Greenies will send junior Tyler Mapes to the mound, after he pitched a third of an inning in relief on Saturday, being credited with the loss. Southeastern Louisiana will rely on lefty Kyle Cedotal to get the job done from the mound. Cedotal was credited with the win during Southeastern's 5-3 victory over UT-Martin on Feb. 16. In that game, Cedotal threw two innings in relief, giving up one hit and one walk while striking out two.

The game will begin at 6:30pm CST. The Green Wave hold a commanding lead in the all-time series against the Lions, going 71-29. The two squads faced each other three times in 2012, with Tulane winning each contest.

Fans can tune into Tulane's new flagship station, WMTI 106.1 FM, for Tuesday's broadcast, and live video and audio will be made available through TulaneGreenWave.com to All-Access members. Live stats will also be made available through TulaneGreenWave.com.
