The Tulane baseball team opens its 2001 campaign against Sam Houston State on Friday, February 2 at Turchin Stadium. First pitch is 6:30 p.m.

The Wave plays a three-game series with the Bearkats, marking the first time these teams have played each other in baseball.

"Sam Houston State does pose a challenge," Head Coach Rick Jones said. "They are very aggressive and have had outstanding clubs. We are going to have to be ready to play."

Saturday's game is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. and Sunday's game will begin at 1:00 p.m.

Starting on the mound for the Wave Friday evening is junior college transfer Beau Richardson. Senior Barth Melius is scheduled to start on Saturday and Andrew Corona gets the start on Sunday.

This season Tulane returns seven starters including the 2001 Conference USA Preseason Player of the Year, Jake Gautreau, All-Conference USA selections James Jurries (Lake Jackson, Texas), Steve Shirley (Tampa, Fla.), Nick Bourgeois (Lake Charles, La.), James Burgess (Las Vegas, Nev.) The squad also returns Matt Groff (Ft. Myers, Fla.) and Andy Cannizaro (Mandeville, La.). New to the roster in 2001 are Junior National Team member Michael Aubrey (Shreveport, La.) and prep standout Anthony Giarratano (Marlboro, N.J.).

In December, Tulane was ranked 33rd by Louisville Slugger/Collegiate Baseball Preseason Poll and 19th by the Baseball America Preseason Poll. The Baseball Weekly/ESPN Coaches' Poll gave the Wave a preseason ranking of 25, while the coaches of Conference USA picked the Green Wave to win the league title.
