NEW ORLEANS - Tulane baseball head coach Rick Jones and his 2013 squad will take part in their first practice this Friday at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.
For the first time this season, the entire team will work together towards their ultimate goal of winning a College World Series. The team will have a little less than three weeks to prepare for their first game of the 2013 campaign. Practices will regularly take place at 2:15 at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium before the season begins, but times and locations are subject to change. The Greenies will also scrimmage on the weekends prior to the season in order to prepare for a slate of 50 plus games.
"We have 17 practice days, so our goal will be to establish some semblance of what our weekend rotation will be before going to the Texas State Tournament," stated Jones. "We want to better understand the back end of our bullpen and we want to be comfortable behind the plate."
Fortunately for the Green Wave, a plethora of key components from a squad that won 38 contests last year will be returning. Senior infielders Brennan Middleton (.357 batting average, 21 RBIs, 14 stolen bases), Garrett Cannizaro (.305, four home runs, 42 RBIs) and Sean Potkay (.313, five home runs, 29 RBIs) will team up with senior outfielder Brandon Boudreaux (.330, eight home runs, 36 RBIs) to form one of the most feared lineups in Conference USA. As a team in 2012, the Green Wave batted .305 - tops in the conference.
The pitching staff from last season posted an ERA of 3.38 - the lowest by a Tulane squad since 1980. The anchors of that staff will take the mound once again this season as right-handed pitcher Alex Byo (9-4, 3.38 ERA, 50 strikeouts) and left-handed pitcher David Napoli (7-3, 2.86 ERA, 57 strikeouts) return for their senior campaigns. In fact, every pitcher who started a game for the Greenies last year will return in 2013.
