David Napoli is the lone pitcher from Tulane recognized by College Sports Madness
Jan. 18, 2013
NEW ORLEANS - The Tulane baseball team placed a league-high five players on the College Sports Madness Preseason All-Conference USA team, the web site announced.
Senior infielder Brennan Middleton and senior outfielder Brandon Boudreaux were named to the First Team, while senior infielders Sean Potkay and Garrett Cannizaro - along with senior pitcher David Napoli - were named to the Second Team.
Middleton led the Green Wave with a .357 batting average last season - a clip also good for second in the conference - while also driving in 19 runs. The Baton Rouge, La., native started 57 games at shortstop in 2012, where he posted a fielding percentage of .959. In addition to his superb batting average, Middleton led the team in stolen bases (14), sacrifice bunts (11), assists (180) and fielding double plays (36). He earned a spot on the 2012 Second Team All-Conference USA team after the season for his efforts.
Boudreaux placed third on the team with a .330 batting average, but he was one of the more powerful hitters on the team last season. His eight home runs were second only to Jeremy Schaffer - who was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals this past summer. Boudreaux was named the Conference USA Hitter of the Week three times during the 2012 campaign, which is a school record. The Mandeville, La., native, who played predominately in left field, started 53 games last year. He and the aforementioned Schaffer represented Tulane on the 2012 First Team All-Conference USA team.
Potkay - who transferred from Western Nevada College prior to the 2012 season - started 46 games last season, with 40 of those coming at first base. The Bozeman, Mont., native drove in the game winning run three times on the year. He was second in Conference USA in on-base percentage (.458), and his batting average of .313 was sixth on the team. Potkay was second on the team in walks with 37.
Cannizaro - also from Mandeville, La. - batted .305 on the year while making 54 starts at third base and one start at shortstop. His 42 RBIs were enough for eighth place in the conference. Cannizaro, who was drafted by the New York Yankees last summer, was second on the 2012 Green Wave squad in assists (121) and sacrifice bunts (five). He placed third in doubles (12), runs scored (42) and RBIs and was fourth in hits (69), stolen bases (6) and total bases (95).
Napoli - the lone pitcher from Tulane named to the College Sports Madness All-Preseason Team - went 7-3 last year with a 2.86 ERA. His low ERA helped lead Tulane's pitching staff to the lowest team ERA (3.38) since 1980. He held batters to a .249 batting average, and was honored by Conference USA by being selected to the 2012 All-Conference USA Second Team. The New Orleans native's 57 strikeouts were tops on the team, and his 12 starts were second only to Alex Byo.
The College Sports Madness Preseason All-American Team will be announced prior to the start of the season.
The Green Wave will begin their 2013 season at the Texas State Tournament on Feb. 15 with a contest against Sam Houston State. Their first home tilt will be against Southeastern Louisiana on Feb. 19.
