NEW ORLEANS - One weekend prior to opening the 2014 season, Tulane's baseball program will host a bevy of alumni activities, including the return of the Alumni Game on Feb. 8 at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.
The Green Wave will play two Alumni Games on Feb. 8, pitting some of the program's greatest players against some of the current Tulane players. At 11:30am CT, players who wore the Olive and Blue prior to 1994 will play against one another. Following that game at 2pm CT, the current roster of Green Wave players will play a roster comprised of players that have played for Tulane since 1994.
Fans looking to catch a glimpse of past Green Wave players will have the opportunity to do so, as the games will be open to the public, free of charge.
Alumni games had been a constant prior to Green Wave baseball seasons of years past, but February's will mark the first since the 2007 campaign.
"I'm really excited about the games," said Tulane head baseball coach Rick Jones. "It's something that we have missed for the last few years. I have always looked forward to them. We have a lot of recent alumni who will make the game against our current club very competitive, allowing us to prepare before we open up the season."
The Friday night prior to the alumni games, Tulane baseball will be holding an event for their alumni at Amici Ristorante and Bar (3218 Magazine Street) from 6:30-8:30 pm CT.
In addition to the alumni games, the baseball program and the Tulane athletic department will honor Jones' first squad, as this year will mark the 20th anniversary of the 1994 team.
"When I look back, that was one of the most fun years of my career," stated Jones of his first team as head coach of the Green Wave. "They were eight games under .500 the year before, and we didn't have a huge recruiting class other than Nate Bosio and Jack Cressand, so the 1994 club was basically the same club as the year before with the exception of a few guys who had graduated. We ended up going to the NCAA Tournament. They just bought into everything as a staff. It was just unbelievably fun for us."
"If you look at that group now and see how successful they've become, it's no secret why we had the kind of year we did," added Jones. "We had some really good players, but they were also really good people and citizens."
Desi Vega's Steakhouse (628 St. Charles Ave.) will hold a special gathering for the 1994 squad Saturday evening from 7-9pm CT after the alumni games.
