Recap | Final Stats | Quotes
Florida State 16, Tulane 7 Today's NCAA Tallahassee Regional game vs. Florida State marks the 58th meeting between the two teams on the diamond. Following the loss, Tulane is now 18-40 all-time against the Seminoles. This is the second time in school history that Tulane has played in the "if necessary" game of an NCAA Regional and the Green Wave are now 0-2 in those ballgames. The Green Wave forced the if-necessary ballgame in the 1999 Auburn Regional by defeating the host Tigers, 7-5, but fell in the second championship game, 13-9. With the loss, Tulane concludes the 2008 season 39-22-1 on the year. The Green Wave posted their 15th consecutive winning season in as many years under head coach Rick Jones. Monday's 16-7 loss to No. 4 national seed Florida State drops Tulane's all-time NCAA Regional record to 29-31, including a 22-18 mark under head coach Rick Jones. By allowing 16 runs in Monday's loss to Florida State, Tulane gave up 38 total runs in the 2008 NCAA Tallahassee Regional - four vs. Florida on Friday, one vs. Bucknell on Saturday, 17 vs. Florida State on Sunday and 16 vs. the Seminoles tonight. That is the second most runs allowed by the Green Wave ever in Regional play. The Tulane record for Regional runs allowed is 41 in five games during the 1999 NCAA Auburn Regional. Junior designated hitter Warren McFadden and junior left fielder Scott Powell were named to the 2008 NCAA Tallahassee Regional All-Tournament Team. The two Green Wave standouts represent the 38th and 39th Tulane student-athletes to claim All-Regional honors. The honors were the first of either player's respective careers.
One notable Green Wave player left off the All-Regional Team was sophomore shortstop Josh Prince who actually led Tulane with seven hits in the 2008 NCAA Regional. In the tournament, Prince hit .438 (7-for-16) with three doubles, two RBI, three runs scored and a stolen base. By going 2-2 in the 2008 NCAA Tallahassee Regional, Tulane advanced to a Regional Championship Game for the seventh time in school history after previously advancing in 1986 in Baton Rouge, 1999 in Auburn (Ala.), 2001 in New Orleans, 2004 in Oxford (Miss.) and 2005 in New Orleans, 2006 in Oxford. Tulane has now advanced to the Regional finals in each of their last four NCAA postseason appearances, including winning Regional titles in 2004 (Oxford, Miss.) and 2005 (New Orleans, La.). Despite Monday night's loss, Tulane now has at least two victories in NCAA Regional play in its last four trips to the postseason. The last time the Green Wave played in a Regional and failed to at least two games came during the 2003 NCAA Baton Rouge Regional when Tulane opened the event with an 8-3 win over UNC-Wilmington before falling to host LSU (13-5) and to the Seahawks (9-8). In spite of going 0-for-3 in Monday's Regional contest against Florida State, freshman third baseman Rob Segedin finished the 2008 season tied for the team lead in batting average with a .322 mark. He shares the 2008 honor with junior infielder/outfielder Anthony Scelfo and becomes the first Green Wave rookie to pace the team in hitting since Barry Butera hit .360 in 1975. With a sacrifice fly in tonight's ballgame, Rob Segedin padded his season RBI total to a team-best 59. That is the most runs driven in by a Tulane freshman since Michael Aubrey had 69 in 2001. With the loss, Tulane is now 19-14 in tournament games held at Dick Howser Stadium, including a 16-6 mark on a neutral surface. Prior to this weekend's 2008 NCAA Tallahassee Regional, Tulane played at Florida State in the now defunct Metro Conference Tournament from 1978-85 and again in the 1988 NCAA East Regional. In NCAA Regional contest held at Dick Howser Stadium, Tulane is now 3-4, including an 0-3 mark against the Seminoles. |
