AUBURN, Ala. - Tulane (47-16) eliminated its second team of the day in the Auburn NCAA Regional as they defeated Winthrop (40-23)15-8 Saturday night.
Heading into the bottom of the fourth, the Green Wave owned a two run lead, but secured a convincing lead by scoring eight runs, and put the Wave up 13-3. Winthrop took a last stab at Tulane as they scored five runs in the top of the ninth, but the Green Wave went on to win it 15- 8.
Jake Gautreau tied the Tulane freshman home run record as he belted his 20th of the season and caught up to James Jurries. For the game, Gautreau went 2-for-3 with one home run and a game high four RBI. Steve Shirley was 2-for-4 with one double and three RBI, while Jake Burnham went 2-for-5 with three RBI and a home run. Chad Sutter was the third Green Wave player to hit a homer in the game.
For Winthrop, Jason Colson, Todd Leathers and Jason Tarasuik all recorded two RBI each.
Raul Echeverz pitched his first complete game of the season, as he improved to 6-2 on the year. Through nine innings, Echeverz struck out three, and gave up five earned runs.
Terry Krosschell (10-5) got the loss for Winthrop after giving up 12 runs in 3 2/3 innings.
Tulane takes on Auburn at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday.
