MILLINGTON, Tenn. - Tulane (43-15) recorded 10 multi base hits, as they pounded a tournament record seven doubles, in its 11-4 victory over Southern Miss (37-20) in the second round of the C-USA Tournament on Thursday.
The Eagles took a 4-2 lead in the third inning, but the Wave battled from behind and tied the game in the fifth as Andy Cannizaro scored on a James Jurries ground out.
The Wave scored at least one run in each of the remaining innings, taking the lead in the sixth as Steve Shirley hit an RBI single to right. Matt Groff, and Cannizaro also recorded RBI in the sixth, as the Wave led USM 7-4.
At the plate for the Green Wave, Shirley went 3-for-5 with one home run and two RBI. Chad Sutter went 2-for-5, as hit his 20th homer of the season, and recorded a game high three RBI. Mickey McKee was 4-for-5 and scored two runs.
USM's Jeremy Albritton was 1-for-4 with three RBI.
After giving up four runs in the third, Tulanes Jared Berkowitz (12-3) allowed just three base runners and held the Eagles scoreless through the eighth inning. Brandon Belanger relieved Berkowitz in the ninth. Berkowitz went eight innings, gave up nine hits, walked none and struck out two.
Colby Calcote fell to 2-4 on the year. Calcote went 4 1/3 innings, gave up four runs, and struck out two.
Southern Miss plays Louisville on Friday at 3:00 p.m. The winnner plays Tulane on Saturday at 9:00 a.m.
