MILLINGTON, Tenn. - Conference USA Freshman of the Year James Jurries slammed a grand slam as Tulane (42-15) advanced into the winners bracket of the C-USA Championship with a 10-5 victory over Cincinnati (30-28) on Wednesday afternoon at USA Stadium.
Jurries went 2-4 with five RBI, including a sixth-inning grand slam, as the Green Wave held off a late Bearcat rally from a 9-0 deficit to advance to face Southern Miss.
Fellow C-USA All-Freshman selection Jake Gautreau also slammed a home run, while first-team All-Conference Henry Bonilla (11-1) hurled a two-hit shutout over the first 6.2 innings for the No. 2 seeded Green Wave (42-15). Bonilla struck out eight in his eight innings to move to 11-1 on the season.
Cincinnati (30-28) rallied to within 10-5 after a two-run homer by senior Corey Hinton in the seventh and a three-run shot by sophomore Kevin Youkilis is the eighth. Youkilis, a second team All-Conference pick, tallied two hits for UC, who will play Louisville in an elimination game tomorrow morning at 9 pm CST.
UC freshman Joey List kept Tulane off-balance early, allowing just two
runs over the first 4.1 innings before Tulane scored three in the fifth
and four more in the sixth to effectively end UCs chances.
Tulane meets No. 3 seed Southern Miss tomorrow afternoon at 4 pm in the
