HATTIESBURG, MISS.- There was doubt as to whether or not a third game against Southern Miss would be able to happen, with threats of severe weather in the area, but no one is happier to have gotten the official five innings in on Sunday than the boys in green. Tulane put up eight runs to USM's four before the game was called due to inclement weather at Pete Taylor Park, giving the Green Wave (28-20, 9-9, C-USA) the Conference USA series with the 8-4 win.

Tulane jumped ahead in the first inning when they picked up a pair of runs via a Sam Honeck home run off of Southern Miss starter Todd McInnis. Scott Powell had preceded Honeck with an infield hit before the senior first baseman picked up his sixteenth blast of the season. Jeremy Schaffer followed with a base hit back up the box and moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. That opened first base for Seth Henry, who drew the walk. McInnis, who had previously injured his hip flexor when the Golden Eagles had played East Carolina, ended his outing after facing Henry due to the injury.

The Golden Eagles called on lefty Moses Munoz to face the Green Wave lineup and the southpaw recorded two quick outs to end the Tulane first but the Wave already had their 2-0 lead for starter Conrad Flynn.

The Wave tacked on another run in the second, when Drew Allain opened up the top of the second, taking the 1-0 Munoz pitch to straightaway center field on a line for his seventh round-tripper of the season. The Green Wave kept at it, picking up two more runs in the top of the third. Steve Moritz picked up a two-out walk, followed by Evan Mistich reaching on the fielding error from shortstop B.A. Vollmuth. With runners at first and second, Allain delivered again, this time with the RBI single to right field that plated Moritz and moved Mistich to third. With runners at the corners, Allain baited the throw to second, which was thrown away and Mistich picked up the fifth Tulane run in the middle of three.

Rains came down in the middle of the inning and following an hour and five minute rain delay, the teams took the field to resume in the middle of the third. The delay didn't hurt Southern Miss any, as the team put up four runs in the frame with the help of a three-run blast from Corey Stevens. Flynn settled back into a rhythm and struck out the next Golden Eagle to end the inning with Southern Miss closing in, 5-4.

The Wave went back to work with the bats in the fourth as Powell (2-3) hit a chopper up the middle. Honeck (2-3, HR, 2 RBI) laced a pitch off new Golden Eagle hurler Jonathan Johnston, moving Powell to third, while taking second on a throwing attempt to get Powell. Everyone was safe on the play and moved up an additional bag on a Schaffer sac fly and Tulane was up 6-4. Henry stepped in and picked up an RBI single to score Honeck and the Green Wave were up 7-4.

The Wave tacked on another run in the top of the fifth when Mistich led off with a double to center field. He advanced to third on a ground ball to the right side from Allain (2-3, 2 RBI) and crossed the pay station on a wild pitch from the Golden Eagles' fourth arm of the afternoon, Wade Weathers and Tulane enjoyed the 8-4 lead in the middle of five.

Flynn (5-3) went to work in the fifth, giving up just a lead off bunt single before retiring the next three Golden Eagles in order to end the frame, making the game official having gone the mandated five innings. A severe rainstorm that came up following what would have been Honeck's second home run of the game led officials to the decision to call the game, with the contest reverting back to the last full inning of play. The decision erased the sixth inning and in turn, Honeck's bomb, but the Green Wave headed back to New Orleans with the 8-4 victory nonetheless.

Tulane will be back in action Wednesday evening at UNO with first pitch slated for 6:30PM.
