Baseball Takes Series At Memphis With Doubleheader Split
May 2, 2004 MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Junior designated hitter Scott Madden hit a two-RBI single in the top of the eighth and freshman Daniel Latham tossed 3.2 scoreless innings of relief as the Tulane University baseball team defeated Conference USA foe Memphis, 6-4, in the second half of a doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Nat Buring Stadium. Tulane dropped game one 4-0, and fell behind 3-0 early in game two, but junior first baseman Wes Swackhamer and junior catcher Greg Dini both went 3-for-4 with a home run each to lead the Green Wave comeback and give the team in Olive and Blue the series victory, two games to one. Latham came on in the fifth with one out and runners on the corners. After giving up a bloop RBI double to Tiger catcher Kurt Welch, the rookie right-hander tallied six strikeouts and pitched his way out of a two-base hit showing by Memphis in the seventh to improve to 3-1 in 2004. With the split, Tulane improves to 32-14 and 15-6 in Conference USA play. Memphis, meanwhile, falls to 21-19 overall and 10-10 in league action. Memphis plated three runs in the bottom of the first, but Tulane came back as Swackhamer clubbed a solo home run in the second, and the Green Wave scored a pair of runs in the third to tie things up at 3-all. Memphis reclaimed the lead in the fifth when Chad House hit a leadoff single, went to third on a single by Brent Dlugach and came home on Welch's flair to right. But once, again, Tulane got the run back in the top of the sixth as Dini launched his ninth home run of the season over the wall in right center and the score would remain that way until the eighth.
Missed opportunities hurt the Green Wave in game one as Tulane stranded eight on the basepaths, including four in scoring position in their first shutout loss since a 6-0 decision to LSU on March 2 at Zephyr Field. Tulane had runners on the corners with only one away in the top of the first, but Memphis starter Derek Hankins struck out the next two Green Wave hitters to get out of the jam unscathed.
In the second, sophomore Brian Bogusevic - who hit for himself in a start on the mound - hit a one-out double, but was picked off at second to thwart another rally. After Hankins retired the side in order in the top of the third, the Tigers mounted a two-out rally as Chad House walked and Bill Moss singled before Dlugach lifted a triple off the wall in right field to give Memphis a 2-0 lead. Tulane had a chance to answer in the top of the fourth as the Green Wave loaded the bases, but Hankins was able to wiggle off the hook again and turned the visitors away with nothing to show for their effort. Memphis plated another run in the fourth when Ryan Martin hit a leadoff triple and scored on a suicide squeeze off the bat of Josh Payne, and the Tigers closed out the scoring one inning later courtesy of an RBI-single by Dlugach. Bogusevic was nailed with the loss despite striking out eight in a 6.0-inning start to fall to 6-4 on the year. Hankins (6-4) got the win with seven strikeouts while scattering six hits in a complete-game effort. The Green Wave returns to action on Friday, May 7 when the play host to C-USA foe USF at 6:30 p.m. at Turchin Stadium.
