NEW ORLEANS - Gunner Wright doubled twice, drove in two RBI's and struck out six batters in 7.2 innings of work on the mound to lead the Tulane baseball team to a 10-2 victory on Sunday on the turf inside Greer Field at Turchin Stadium. Rob Segedin pounded out four hits - including a double and a home run - and Quinn Pippin was on base all five times at the plate to pace the offense.
Tulane opened the scoring in the first inning when Segedin singled to center field and scored Matt Ryan from second base. After Brandon Boudreaux flew out to start the game, Ryan and Blake Crohan each singled to put a pair of runners on base for Segedin, who extended his hitting streak to ten games.
"Gunner had a great day for us, both offensively and on the mound. He took a one-hitter into the eighth inning and had a good day at the plate too. It was something we became accustomed to seeing over the years, two-way players having days both on the mound and at the plate. It was fun to watch him do that today."
Wright helped his own cause in the second inning with an RBI double down the right field line, scoring Pippin from first after he had coaxed a leadoff walk, to push the Olive and Blue ahead 2-0.
The Green Wave scored three runs in the fifth inning, starting with a leadoff home run from Crohan to left field. Segedin and Jeremy Schaffer each singled, before Segedin scored when Garrett Cannizaro grounded into a double play scratch the run across. After Pippin walked, Wright doubled for the second time in the game and Pippin crossed the plate to give Tulane a 5-0 lead.
Wright had allowed just one hit and a walk through seven innings of work and retired the side in order in five of those innings. He worked into some trouble in the eighth as he allowed the first four base runners to reach and a two-RBI double from Hunter Beaty ended the outing for the right-hander.
Wright tossed 7.2 innings before handing the ball off to Nick Pepitone, who struck out the final batter of the eighth. The junior fanned six batters, allowed three hits and two runs to improve to 3-2 overall on the year. He was also two-for-four at the plate with two RBI's to help his cause on the mound.
The Olive and Blue plated four more runs in the bottom of the eighth as eight players went to the plate and six of them collected hits. Nick Boullosa doubled to start the frame and came in to score on a Ryan single off that ricocheted off the third base bag. Segedin then smacked his eighth home run of the season off of the scoreboard in left field to score the second and third run of the inning. Schaffer singled and scored on a Pippin single to left-center field to close the scoring at 10- 2 in favor of the Green Wave.
Segedin drove in four RBI's to push his team -leading total to 37 this season and now has 32 extra-base hits on the year with a double and home run on Sunday. Pippin walked three times and had a pair of singles, while eight of the nine TU starters collected hits in the game.
Tulane belted out six extra base hits and totaled 17 hits on the day to collect their seventh series victory of 2010. Segedin sits just one double from moving into the single season top-ten and in the game he drove in his 100th RBI of his career with his eighth inning home run.
The Green Wave improve to 23-14 overall and will host Southeastern Louisiana on Tuesday, April 20 on the Turf at Turchin. The first pitch is schedule for 6:00 between the Olive and Blue and the Lions and tickets are available online at www.tulanegreenwave.com or by calling the Ticket Office at (504) 861-WAVE.
