BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - What started as a runaway turned out to be a nailbiter as the Tulane University baseball team won a wild Conference USA series opener over the Blazers of UAB, 17-13, Friday evening at Jerry D. Young Memorial Field.

The Green Wave jumped to an early 9-0 lead after three and a half innings, but a scrappy UAB squad refused to go away and scored six in the bottom of the fourth to cut the lead to three. Tulane seemed to retake control of the contest after scoring a single run in the fifth and plating seven in the top of the seventh, but once again, the Blazers answered in the home half of the frame with another half dozen runs to make it a 17-12 ballgame.

Then, in the bottom of the ninth, rookie reliever Daniel Latham plunked reserve catcher Dan McCollars to open the frame, and designated hitter Nathan McCorkle smoke an RBI double to left to cut the lead to four. After a single by right fielder Cory Helms, Tulane head coach Rick Jones called on senior Joey Charron, and the southpaw came through with a pair of strikeouts to thwart the Blazer rally and earn his fifth save of the game.

With the win, Tulane improved to 26-10 on the year and 10-3 in C-USA play. In addition, Charron claimed sole possession of the Green Wave career saves mark with his 28th stop of his four-years at Tulane, and now ranks eight on the Tulane career strikeout list with 238f to leapfrog Henry Bonilla who fanned 237 during his career from 1999-2000.

Latham, the third pitcher used by the Green Wave on the day, picked up the win after giving up just one run on three hits while striking out two and walking one in 2.1 innings of relief. The Green Wave pounded out 16 hits for the game, and sophomore centerfielder Nathan Southard led the offense by going 3-for-6 with a home run and four RBI.

Tulane and UAB return to action on Saturday at 2 p.m. before closing out the weekend on Sunday with first pitch slated for 1 p.m. Both9 games will be broadcast live on the flagship station of Tulane baseball, WRBH 88.3 fm.
