Final Stats

BATON ROUGE, La. - Sophomore southpaw Brian Bogusevic struck out four and scattered four hits in an 8.2-inning start, and senior closer Joey Charron tied the Tulane career saves record, as the Green Wave baseball team defeated arch-rival LSU, 1-0, Tuesday evening at Alex Box Stadium.

After giving up a two-out single to designated hitter Nick Stavinoha in bottom of the ninth, Bogusevic was replaced by Charron and Rhett Buteau came on to pinch run. Charron pitched himself into a jam by walking the next to batters to load the bases and falling behind eight-hole hitter Blake Gill 3-0, but the preseason All-American bounced back to get Gill to ground out to first to earn his fourth save of the year.

With the win, Tulane (23-8) evens three-game series with LSU (24-6) at one game apiece with the third contest slated for April 27 at the Louisiana Superdome. The shutout was the seventh of the season for Tulane, and marked the first time the Green Wave blanked the Tigers since April 29, 1968 when they defeated LSU by an identical score in Baton Rouge.

Tulane scratched across the only run of the ballgame in the sixth when sophomore centerfielder Nathan Southard ripped a first-pitch offering from LSU starter Jason Determann to the gap in right central, and with one away, junior right fielder Matt Barket laced an RBI-single to left center to account for the final score.

The game, however, belonged to Bogusevic (5-2) who held an LSU team that came into the game hitting .333 with a .528 slugging percentage to a four hits. He gave up just one extra-base hit - a leadoff double off the bat of left fielder Ryan Patterson in the fourth - but never allowed more than one baserunner to reach in any inning while pitching a trio of three-up, three-down frames.

Charron, meanwhile, tallied the 27th save of his illustrious career to tie the record set by Brandon Belanger, who pitched for the Green Wave from 1999-2000. The saves record marks the second Tulane career record Charron inked his name atop as he surpassed the former career appearances record of 109 (Todd Ardoin from 1995-98) and now has played in 116 games.

Barket, senior first baseman Brian Bormaster and junior left fielder Wes Swackhamer tallied two hits each as Tulane pounded out seven hits against the Tigers. Determann (2-1) was saddled with the loss after giving up one earned run on six hits while walking none and striking out three in 6.0 solid innings, junior Lane Mestepey tossed 2.1 scoreless inning before giving way to junior Jordan Faircloth, who retired the only two batters he faced.

The Green Wave return to action on Friday, April 9 when they open a three-game slate against Conference USA foe Louisville at 6:30 p.m. at Turchin Stadium. The two teams will play again on Saturday at 2 p.m. before closing out the weekend on Sunday with first pitch slated for 1 p.m. For ticket information, contact the Tulane Athletics Ticket Office at (504) 861-WAVE.
