TULANE ASSOCIATE HEAD COACH Mark Kingston
On the team's performance at the plate
"It was just one of those things were we started having good at-bats early, guys built on each other and we had a great day. Obviously, it was our best day of the season."
On the reason for the sudden offensive surge
"(UC) Irvine's pitching was so good, that when you come back and you get through that, you're guys are better as a result. Irvine's ERA was a 1.13 and we had to battle. But I think we are better hitters because of it and I think that showed last night. Even though we had nine hits (on Tuesday), we could easily have had probably 15. Having 23 again today, I think you're starting to see the residual effects of playing good teams that have very good pitching early in the season."
On the performance of Segedin, Scelfo and Rodgers
"It's incredible to have a freshman go out and have six hits with six RBI. You have to tip your cap. He's been working very, very hard and it's good to see that work paying off. Anthony Scelfo having five hits with a home run himself, and those two guys were very good today. Andrew Rodgers had a pair of home runs today I actually mentioned early in the pregame show that Rodgers could have five or six home runs if the wind hadn't been blowing in so hard earlier in the season. Today, the wind laid down a little bit and he showed what he's capable of with those two big-time home runs."
JUNIOR DESIGNATED HITTER Andrew Rodgers
On the team's offensive struggles over the weekend
"All that hard work finally paid off. I felt comfortable today at the plate and all of our hitters did. It was a good day all around and we really needed that as hitters - to come out and score a lot of runs."
On the cliché that hitting is contagious
"We all just broke out together. We really needed this and it's been a long time coming. We really need to pick our pitchers up."
FRESHMAN THIRD BASEMAN Rob Segedin
On his performance Wednesday against Northwestern State
"I was just trying to see the ball and hit it. That and I tried to go up to the plate with some confidence. The coaches have been preaching that for the past three days and I think it's finally starting to pay off. You can see it in our hitting. We've been more aggressive at the plate and swinging the bat a lot harder and that's the major thing that has helped our hitters the past couple of days."
On if this game can propel the offense for the rest of the season
"In every season, there's always a starting point where it kicks some part of the game off. Today, we proved that we could hit. Hopefully this jumps starts us to having a solid weekend."
NORTHWESTERN STATE HEAD COACH J.P. DAVIS
Overall thoughts on the game
"The ball was jumping today. It was frustrating because last night we did such a good job, especially on the mound where we got the ball under the bat. Tulane has a bunch of big strong guys who like the ball out in front of the plate. We were behind in the count all day, left it out over the plate all day and they did what they were supposed to do."
On if having to play two midweek games is a disservice to college baseball
"It's tough. We've played two games midweek before, but when you have to do it every week,it's tough. It's taxing on your bullpen. I know they used a weekend starter to come out of the bullpen today and that's not something that right now I'm not going to do. Especially on a Wednesday because you have to get ready for the weekend."
On the performance of Tulane pitcher Trey Martin
"Unlike last night, I think he just worked down in the zone. That's the key. When the ball is flying out of the yard the way it was today, you have to work under the bat."
