TULANE HEAD COACH Rick Jones
Thoughts on the game
"I thought Matt Goebel pitched well and I thought that Preston Claiborne gave us a good effort. I didn't feel like were as good defensively as we usually are. We also took five third strikes, and I want to see us more competitive with two strikes. We didn't drive a whole lot of baseballs, tonight. We put some balls in play, but we didn't drive a whole lot of them. Nate Simon gave us a great lift both offensively and defensively, and I think that was one of the big keys."
On the depth of the McNeese State left fielder on Simon's two-run triple
"He's playing opposite-side outfielder there. Nate had fouled off four or five balls. I don't know. They were trying to cut the run at the plate, maybe, and keep it close. Nate has a lot of backspin on his ball. Even though (the left fielder) was shallow, he hit that thing a long ways. I think it was a combination if him being fairly shallow and Nate driving the ball."
On the performance of Preston Claiborne
"If it had been a save opportunity, Daniel (Latham) would have came on in the ninth. But it wasn't and Preston did a good job. We needed that to happen. That gives us a little bit more depth tomorrow. It gives (Drew) Zizinia another day and Daniel another day. That helps us a little bit tomorrow."
TULANE STATING PITCHER Matt Goebel
On his performance Tuesday against McNeese State
"With each start, you want to try and build on the last one. There were a couple of things I wanted to focus on this week going in to this start that I wanted to try and improve on. I feel like I did that, and as long as I'm throwing strikes and giving us a chance to win, I'm happy."
TULANE RELIEVER Preston Claiborne
On earning his first career save
"I'm really happy to get that one out of the way. I feel bad for Hank (Daniel Latham) because I know he got hot in the bottom of the eighth. It was 6-3 and then those runs score. I'm just glad I was able to get my first career save, even if it was a four-inning save. It's going to be a long week, and anything I can do to help the team, I'm happy to do."
