Quotes Following Baseball's 14-6 Victory Over Southern

Recap |  Final Stats

TULANE HEAD COACH Rick Jones

Overall thoughts on the game
"We had 10 hits, not a ton of hits, but we drew some base on balls and had some quality at-bats. They made five errors, but we had to put the ball in play for that to be the case. I think Petiton kept them off balance and Honeck set the tone with the big three-run homer. I thought our at-bats were much more consistent today than they have been and that's something we can build on."

On the two-hit performance by catcher Steve Moritz off the bench
"Steve has done that twice now. That gives us some encouragement there because depth at that position as something we were concerned about. Now, when Steve is catching, we feel we still have a offensive guy back there. He's on a torrid pace right now, but certainly it was encouraging for him to have those two quality at-bats and for him to catch well."

On the pitching of Trey Martin and Preston Claiborne against Southern
"Those two guys had to get their rhythm going. They haven't pitched at all since last week. It was almost like watching the same guy. Both of them were up in the zone early and then they started getting their rhythm and were down in the zone consistently. I think today will really help them for the weekend."

On this weekend's three-game series against UC Irvine
"It'll be a big challenge for us. They're a College World Series team from last year, they've gotten off to a great start against really good competition. We knew the first three weeks of our season were going to really give us a feel for what we needed to do in our program for us to have the type of year that we are accustomed to. This is going to be another one of those great challenges, just like last weekend was."

On what he expects to see from UC Irvine
"Irvine is a California team so they'll play more of a short game, but they also have some guys who can swing it in the middle of the line-up and they've already shown that. They've got a lot of guys back from last year. They've got a different coaching staff, but a veteran coach who has had great success and won a national championship at Southern Cal. Across the board, it's going to be one that we're really going to be challenged by.

On why Tulane scheduled such a top-heavy slate early in 2008
"The way you get better is to play the best people that you can and enjoy the heck out of that experience. That's what we plan on doing."
