Final Stats

NEW ORLEANS, La. - Junior first baseman Michael Aubrey went 3-for-3 with a home run and three RBI to lead a 15-hit Green Wave attack as the Tulane University baseball team pounded George Mason 13-4 Friday night at Turchin Stadium.

Aubrey reached base in all five trips to the plate and Tulane tallied six extra-base hits in the victory. Freshman outfielder Brian Bogusevic came off the bench to go 2-for-2 with a double and a triple, and freshman left fielder Nathan Southard ripped a pair of doubles and had three RBI as the Green Wave improved to 4-0 on the year.

George Mason (0-1) led 2-1 after four and half innings as Patriot starter John Sterling limited Tulane to just one run on three hits in the first three stanzas, but the Green Wave offense exploded for seven runs on five hits in the home half of the fifth to take control of the contest.

Tulane padded its lead in the sixth with an RBI triple by Bogusevic and back-to-back RBI doubles by Southard and designated hitter Wes Swackhamer to make it 11-1 before Aubrey's two-run homer to straight-away center to account for the home team's final score.

The Green Wave drew first blood in the bottom of the first as senior centerfielder Jonny Kaplan led off the inning with a walk and advanced the bases on a groundout and a balk, respectively. After Aubrey got hit by a pitch to put runners on the corners, Tulane successfully executed a double-steal to take a 1-0 lead.

The advantage was short lived, however, as the Patriots scored a pair of runs in the top of the second when right fielder Adam Innerst ripped a two-out RBI double to left to score first baseman Chris Looze, and touched the pay station one at-bat later on an RBI single by designated hitter Jay Cicaro.

George Mason threatened to add to their 2-1 advantage in the fourth when Looze and catcher Nick Prosise both hit singles in the frame, but freshman third baseman Tim Guidry made a great play on a hard-hit ball to start a 5-4-3 double play to end the rally.

From there, it was all Tulane as junior catcher Brian Bormaster started the seven-run rally in the fifth with a leadoff single before Guidry walked and Kaplan singled to load the bases with nobody out. Shortstop Tony Giarratno hit into a fielder's choice in the next at-bat as GMU second baseman Bruce Baldwin made pump fakes to third and second, and his throw to first was late as Tulane tied the contest at 2-all.

After an RBI-single by Aubrey, Sterling was lifted for Jason Mills who promptly plunked Bogusevic before giving up a two-RBI double to Southard and an RBI-single to Swackhamer. Josh Morrison came on at that point for the Patriots to retire the next three batters in order, but the damage was already done.

George Mason plated a run in the top of the sixth, but Tulane answered in the sixth with four consecutive extra-base hits to end any thoughts of a Patriot comeback.

Junior Cory Hahn got the win for the Green Wave, striking out four and walking none while giving up two runs on five hits in 5.0 innings to improve to 2-0 on the year. Freshman reliever Matt Goebel came on for Hahn in the sixth and gave up just one run on two hits while striking out five in 3.0 innings, and junior Will Walter closed things out with a one-run ninth.

Sterling was hit with the loss for the Patriots after giving up six earned runs on six hits through four-plus innings.

Tulane returns to action on Saturday when the Green Wave and the Patriots continue their three-game series with a 2 p.m. contest at Turchin Stadium. The two teams close out the weekend on Sunday with first pitch slated for 1 p.m.
