METAIRIE, La. - Junior shortstop Cat Everett and sophomore right fielder Warren McFadden had two hits each, but it was not enough as the Tulane University baseball team dropped the Senator's Cup Series finale to Southeastern Louisiana, 4-0, Sunday afternoon at Zephyr Field.

Tulane and SLU were tied in the hits column with seven apiece, but the Lions' combination of starter Chris Cappo and reliever Chris Province was able to keep the Green Wave off the board to give Southeastern a 2-1 series victory. The Green Wave return to action on Friday, Feb. 16, when they open a three-game series against North Florida at 6:30 p.m. at Zephyr Field.

"It was a very disappointing day for us offensively," Tulane head coach Rick Jones said. "We were not a good offensive club the last two days. We didn't hit with authority or put much pressure on their defense. Southeastern just played better then we did.

"We have to have a sense of urgency every time we play. We're going to go back to work on Tuesday to get that corrected. Whether it's attitude or a personnel change, we've got to be better offensively if we're going to be better club."

Tulane had its chances early on, but it was the Lions who drew first blood as designated hitter Chase Burch hit a one-out RBI-single in the third before center fielder Bryan Frichter followed with a two-run double two at-bats later to stake Southeastern to a 3-0 lead.

Following a scoreless fourth, Southeastern tacked on another run in the fifth courtesy of a Green Wave error as a relay throw on a potential double-play ball sailed over the head of first baseman Tim Guidry which allowed Burch to score all the way from second.

The Green Wave had let a scoring opportunity slip through its fingers in the bottom of the sixth as sophomore right fielder Warren McFadden walked and sophomore centerfielder Aja Barto singled to open the inning. From there, Southeastern brought Province in from the bullpen, who quickly got a double play and a fly ball to get out of the inning unscathed before throwing a trio of three-up, three-down frames.

Cappo (1-0), the brother of former Tulane All-American hurler Mike Romano, scattered seven singles while walking a pair and striking out one in five-plus innings to earn the win. Province, meanwhile, was perfect in his four frames to earn his first save of 2007.

The Green Wave bullpen had another solid outing as freshman Preston Claiborne gave up just a single in 1.2 innings of scoreless relief and senior All-American candidate Daniel Latham retired all six men he faced over the final two frames. Starter Shooter Hunt, meanwhile, was nailed with the loss after allowing all four runs (three earned) on six hits and a walk while tallying three strikeouts in 5.1 innings of work.

"This weekend was disappointing for our fans and for us as a team, and we are going to have to get things fixed as quickly as possible," Jones said.
