Prior to Tulane: Spent two years at the University of Kentucky where he saw time on the mound and in the infield...as a pitcher, appeared in 37 games with 17 starts, tallying a 7-13 record with a 5.18 ERA, 111 strikeouts and 50 walks in 130.1 innings of work...earned his first career complete-game victory with an eight-strikeout, four-hit decision over Tennessee (4/7/02)...tallied five or more strikeouts on eight occasions, including eight strikeouts vs. Georgia (5/12/01) and a career-best 11 at Cincinnati (4/24/01)...with the bat, hit .214 (33-for-154) with six home runs, four doubles, a triple and 20 RBI...has seven career multiple-hit games and seven multiple-RBI contests...led Kentucky as a freshman with 60 strikeouts and was tied for second with four wins...concluded the 2001 season with a win over then-No. 12 Georgia (5/12) when he struck out eight in 7.0 innings...also belted a two-run homer in the ninth against No. 7 LSU (4/1) to clinch a 9-5 UK win...as a sophomore, finished tied for second on the team in wins (3), third in ERA (4.83), fourth in innings pitched (69.0) and tied for fourth in strikeouts (51).
Summer Ball: Played with the Arlington Senators of the Clark Griffin League in 2001 and with the Hyannis Mets of the Cape Cod League in 2002...with the Mets, finished sixth in the Cape with a team-leading 1.30 ERA...selected to the West All-Star team after appearing in 11 games, including eight starts, and leading the team in strikeouts (53) and innings pitched (55.1)...with the Senators, went 5-0 with a 0.41 ERA while helping the team win the league championship and advance to the AAABA National Championships
High School: Four-year letterman at Louisville Male High where he saw action on the mound and at third base for coach Todd Driskell...was a two-time USA Today All-American...earned all-state honors as a junior and senior, and was named all-county his final three prep seasons...named Jefferson County Junior and Senior of the Year...also lettered three times in football where he helped the Bulldogs win the 4A State Championship as a junior.
