Sept. 14, 2005
DALLAS, Texas - Charged by Tulane University president Dr. Scott Cowen to "carry the torch, be the face and represent the name" of the University for the upcoming seasons while its students, faculty and staff remain displaced from New Orleans, Tulane Athletics teams across all sports will wear a commemorative patch illustrating those three points throughout the 2005-06 academic year. The Green Wave football team will be the first to wear the patch when it takes on Mississippi State on national television this weekend from Shreveport, La. in its first action of 2005.
"This logo embodies our current focus," said Rick Dickson, Tulane Athletic Director. "We said from the beginning that traditional scorecards are out the window as far as Tulane Athletics is concerned this year. This is our goal, to get back in the game, to persevere and to accomplish this mission of representing our university and our community."
Tulane teams will make strides toward those goals this weekend when its football team hosts Mississippi State at Independence Stadium in Shreveport, Louisiana at 7 p.m. Tickets for the game, which will be nationally-televised by CSTV: College Sports Television and the i Network (formerly PAX TV) are on sale through Ticketmaster outlets in Louisiana and Mississippi, at www.Ticketmaster.com and by calling 800-488-5252. Tickets are $35 for sideline general admission seats and $20 for end zone general admission.
The Green Wave volleyball team will be in action this weekend for the first time since August 26 at its temporary home in College Station, Texas when it plays host to the NOKIA Sugar Bowl Classic on Friday and Sunday, featuring teams from Notre Dame, LSU and Arizona State.
The new logo and patch, designed by Judy Henry of jmac design in Tulsa, Okla., is in the shape of Tulane University's primary logo, the "Shield." A thick green outline carries the words "The Torch, The Face, The Name" reminding fans and the national audience of Tulane Athletics' mission this year.
