BATON ROUGE - The 2007 Louisiana Sportswriters Association Women's Track and Field team was released this weekend and nine different Tulane student-athletes made the team in seven events.
Tulane All-American sprinter Gloria Asumnu placed first in the 100-meter dash with a then-school-record time of 11.20 seconds. She placed second in the 200-meter dash also with a school-record time of 22.70 seconds. Distance runners Aubrey Phillips and Keriann Langley placed first and second in the 5000-meter run with season-best times of 17:23.30 and 17:45.27 respectively, and Phillips claimed first in the 10,000-meter run in a time of 36:48.32. Freshman Nicolette Taku claimed third place on the team in the Heptathlon by gaining 4,324 points at the Conference USA Championships.
The 4x100-meter relay team placed second and the 4x400-meter relay team took third place in their respective events. The 4x100 team was comprised of Taneekwa Ross, Jasmine Momoh, Shaina Pelham and Asumnu and gained their position with a school record time of 44.74 seconds. The 4x400 team included Asumnu, Shanon Beeelendorf, Olivia Kizzee and Momoh and claimed the spot with a season-best time of 3:37.58 set at the NCAA Mideast Regional.
The teams were determined by the top three times in each of the major outdoor events based on the official regional qualifying list as provided by the NCAA. State college Track and Field Sports Information Directors nominated athletes for special awards categories which were then voted on by an LSWA panel.
