Senior Mike Mainguy Graduated Summa Cum Laude with Honors from Tulane's School of Science and Engineering
June 13, 2012
NEW ORLEANS - Tulane cross country/track and field student-athlete Mike Mainguy was one of 12 Conference USA student-athletes named to the recipient list of the Jim Castañeda Postgraduate Scholarship Award, C-USA Commissioner Britton Banowsky announced on Wednesday (June 13).
This is the fourth year the award has been named for Dr. Castañeda, who served Rice University for 46 years as an educator, coach and Faculty Athletics Representative before he passed away in November 2008. The conference annually presents the $4,000 Postgraduate Scholarship awards to graduates as selected by the C-USA Faculty Athletics Representatives and approved by the Board of Directors.
Mainguy completed his coursework within Tulane's School of Science and Engineering with a 3.901 grade point average. He graduated Summa Cum Laude with honors with his Bachelors of Science degree in May and earned the Arnold Gerrall Award for Neuroscience. The Brookline, Mass. native was a six-time Conference USA All-Academic Team selection, earning the nod three times in cross country and three times in track and field, while garnering the C-USA Commissioners Academic Medal all four seasons.
Venturing to the Crescent City from the Northeast, Mainguy was one of the cornerstones in restarting the men's cross country and track and field programs. On the course, Mainguy competed in all 22 of the team's cross country competitions over the past four seasons, including the men's squads' first NCAA South Central Regional competition since 2002. On the oval, he competed in the 1,500, 3,000 and 5,000 meter events and set a new personal best of 9:14.46 in the 3,000 meter this season at the Lion Invitational. He narrowly missed a career-best in the 5,000-meter event and competed at the C-USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships during each of his final three seasons on the uptown campus.
An aspiring physician, Mainguy will take some time to work in the medical field before applying to medical school for the 2013-14 academic year. Mainguy would like to take time to get to know the nuances of the medical field before entering his graduate program.
