BATON ROUGE - The Green Wave men's and women's cross country team each posted finishes in the top six of the LSU Invitational Saturday morning in Baton Rouge. Freshman Katherine Crabtree paced the women's squad while Brian Lozes was the top Tulane men's runner for the third straight event.
"Katherine ran a very strong race during the first two miles, maintaining contact with the front pack of five runners in the field," head coach Eric Peterson said.
"She is capable of really competing well against a field of this caliber and I look for strong performances in the future."
Tulane men finished sixth of 13 teams with 191 points, led by sophomore Brian Lozes with a time of 28:10 in the 8K run, placing 33rd.
"Brian went out very aggressively in the first mile and paid a price for that early pace as the race unfolded," Peterson continued. "He was able to hold on for a top 35 place finish while running over one minute faster on this course then last year."
Sophomore Mike Mainguy finished in 28:55, coming in 42nd. Freshman Jordan Vance was the third runner across the line for Tulane, turning in a time of 29:58 for 58th position. Sophomore Max Miller came in 61st in 309:22, while sophomore Jordon Holtzman made his season debut in 68th place, with a time of 31:05 as Tulane's final scorer.
Freshman Phillip Scruggs placed 81st in 33:03, while freshman Sam King made his Tulane debut in 33:22, for 85th of 112 runners.
The Tulane women placed fifth of 13 teams with 143 points. Crabtree led Tulane with a time of 20:14 in the 5K race to finish 18th. She has been one of Tulane's top two runners in each of the first three meets. Junior Rebecca Coady, who led Tulane in the first two meets of the season including a victory at the Mook 4 Invitational, sat out the LSU Invitational with a sore achilles.
"Rebecca will resume practice next week and begin to prepare to rejoin the team next weekend in Florida," Peterson commented.
Freshman Maggie Gentry came in 23rd with a time of 20:30 to be the second Green Wave runner across the line.
Sophomore Johanna Gretschel clocked in at 21:04 to finish 35th, with freshman Emmi Aguillard right behind in 37th with a time of 21:11. Junior Caitlin Hornbeck was the final Tulane scorer, placing 40th in 21:25.
Sophomore Marina Leith made her Tulane debut and finished on Hornbeck's heels, in 41st just one second behind her teammate (21:26). The Wave's sixth finisher was sophomore Jessica Dallager in 70th, posting a 23:12. Sophomore Peggy Keplinger finished 93rd with a time of 25:13.67.
Houston took the women's competition with 40 points, led by race winner Stephanie Aldea in 19:01.
Tulane will compete next weekend, October 3, at the Gulf Coast Stampede in Pensacola, Fla.
