Sept. 8, 2000
NEW ORLEANS -- With five runners finishing in the top eight, the Tulane men's cross country team easily claimed the team title at the Tulane Green Wave Cross Country Invitational run at Levee Oaks Park in New Orleans Friday. Tulane runners finished second, fourth, fifth, seventh and eighth as the Green Wave out-distanced second-place Alabama in the 5,000-meter run. Chris Mutai of Alabama won the men's race with a time of 14:47.3 while Tulane's Solomon Kandie was second in 14:49.0. Alabama's Troy Henderson was third, followed by Anthony Lagat and Peter Rotich of Tulane. In the team race, Tulane totalled 26 points while Alabama had 41. LSU placed third with 98 points while UL-Lafayette was fourth (119) and Southeastern Louisiana fifth (122). Alabama claimed the team title in the 11-team women's race with 64 points while Tulane and Mississippi State tied for second at 82 points apiece. New Orleans, led by individual winner Michaela Mannova, was fourth and Southern Miss placed fifth. Mannova covered the two-mile course in 11:00.5 for the victory over Theresa Maru of Tulane. Tulane runners Katrina Gemmell and Lyndie Galka also finished in the top 10 at seventh and 10th, respectively. "We're pleased anytime we can win," said Tulane Head Coach Ron Bazil. "The men ran extremely well and the women did well considering we were running without our best runner (Hanne Lyngstad). We trained hard this week. For us, the Conference USA meet and the NCAA regionals are the big things. Everything else leads up to that." The Tulane Green Wave Cross Country Invitational marked the first meet of the 2000 cross country season. The team will run at the Popeye's Ragin' Cajun Invitational in Lafayette, La. in two weeks.
