While the head coach of any program directs the team on its path to success, another crucial aspect to reach those goals is an effective coaching staff. In his third year with the Green Wave program is top assistant Jim Patchell, who works with all areas of the Green Wave program.

Prior to his arrival at Tulane, Patchell was an assistant coach for the national powerhouse University of Arkansas program. While pursuing a doctorate degree at Arkansas, Patchell assisted with the pole vault and multi-events. He helped the Razorbacks to seven NCAA National Championships (one cross country, three indoor track and three outdoor track). He received his doctorate in kinesiology in 1999.

Patchell's coaching career began at his alma mater, Arkansas State, where he served as a graduate assistant for the 1994 and 1995 seasons. He received his master's degree in exercise physiology in 1995.

Originally from Heber Springs, Ark., Patchell graduated from Arkansas State in 1993 with a bachelor's degree in exercise science. While at ASU, Patchell was a member of the track and field teams from 1988 to 1993. He participated in the sprints and hurdles.
