Patchell's coaching career began at his alma mater, Arkansas State, where he served as a graduate assistant for the 1994 and 1995 seasons. He received his master's degree in exercise physiology in 1995.

Originally from Heber Springs, Ark., Patchell graduated from Arkansas State in 1993 with a bachelor's degree in exercise science. While at ASU, Patchell was a member of the track and field teams from 1988 to 1993. He participated in the sprints and hurdles.
