Now entering his third season as an assistant coach with the Green Wave track program is Olympic Gold Medalist Derek Mills. He works primarily with the Wave sprinters and hurdlers.
A world-class runner throughout the mid 1990s, Mills was part of the United States gold-medal winning squad in the 4x400 Relay at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. He also helped that team to the 1995 World Championships. He was ranked as high as No. 2 in the world in the 400 meters (1994) during his distinguished career.
On the collegiate level, Mills was a dominant performer for Georgia Tech, where he earned his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering in 1995. A native of Washington, D.C., and a graduate of DeMatha Catholic High School, Mills was a four-time NCAA Champion for the Yellow Jackets. He earned All-America recognition 11 times in his career, as well as winning nine Atlantic Coast Conference Championships.
Mills is currently pursuing a master's degree in Tulane's JD/MBA program.
