NEW ORLEANS - For the second straight season, the Tulane track and field program saw both their men's and women's programs along with senior Kasey Rodgers earned All-Academic distinction from the United State Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (UCTFCCCA).
Rodgers is just the second Green Wave track star to earn multiple academic awards from the organization. On the team side, this marks the third time in four seasons that the Green Wave earned the academic award for owning a team GPA of better than 3.00 as a complete squad.
"I am very proud of the recognition that both our men's and women's track and field student-athletes have received," said head coach Eric Peterson. "This is an outstanding academic achievement for our program. For everyone to know that they are performing in the classroom at a very elite level is an appropriate tribute to them and how serious they take their studies. I am very proud of our teams for receiving this honor."
The United State Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced their All-Academic teams on Wednesday and the junior sprinter was one of the record 676 student-athletes honored by the organization. As for team honors, the men's squad was one of 85 team's on the list with a 3.25 GAP and the women's team was among the 171 teams honored with a 3.30 GPA.
"Kasey (Rodgers) has been an outstanding example of what it means to be a student-athlete," said Peterson. "She was always very commitment to being the model of what a student-athlete should be. We were always very aware of the effort she gave to her individual academic pursuits and the dedication that she gave on the track. We are proud of what Kasey was able to accomplish while at Tulane."
On the track, Rodgers competed in a pair of indoor meets and ran in all nine regular season meets, as well as competing at the NCAA East Regional for the second time in her career. The senior owned the team's top marks in both the 100 and 200 meter during the outdoor season and was the top performer on the squad in the 60 meter during the indoor campaign.
Rodgers joined former Green Wave thrower Helmi Leppanen (2005 &2006) as the only two Green Wave student-athletes to earn multiple selections to the USTFCCCA All-Academic team.
To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 and have met either of the following athletic standards: for the indoor season, a student-athlete must have finished the regular season ranked in the national top 96 in an individual event or ranked in the national top 48 (collective listing) in a relay event on the official NCAA POP list provided by TFRRS.org; for the outdoor season, a student-athlete must have participated in any round of the NCAA Division I Championships (including preliminary rounds).
