Track Qualifies Five for NCAA Championships; Bazil to Receive Award
May 31, 1999 NEW ORLEANS - Five Tulane University track and field athletes earned competition spots in the 1999 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. In addition, head coach Ron Bazil will be presented with an award at the NCAA Championships. Seniors Amos Kipyegon and Alison Lambert and juniors Edrige Darling, Lana Garner and Hanne Lyngstad each qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Tulane's five participating student-athletes are the most to qualify for the outdoor championships under head coach Ron Bazil. Lyngstad, a native of Elverum, Norway, will compete in the women's 1,500-meter run. She ranks sixth nationally with a qualifying time of 4:18.38. It is the second consecutive year in which Lyngstad has qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Joining Lyngstad in the 1,500 meters is teammate Alison Lambert. The Walnut Creek, Calif., native qualified for the event with a time of 4:19.93. That mark currently ranks 11th in the nation. It is Lambert's first appearance at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Darling, a native of Kingston, Jamaica, has qualified in the men's 400-meter hurdles. Darling's time of 50.26 currently ranks 12th nationally. A two-time NAIA national champion in this event, Darling is making his first appearance at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Kipyegon, a native of Eldoret, Kenya, makes an appearance at the NCAA Outdoor Championships for the second straight year, this time in the men's 1,500-meter run. Kipyegon's time of 3:43.83 currently ranks 18th nationally. Garner, a native of San Diego, Calif., will be making her first appearance at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the women's 400 meters. Her time of 53.20 seconds ranks 21st nationally. Green Wave head coach Ron Bazil will receive the ACCU-SPLIT National Relay Award while in Boise. The ACCU-SPLIT Timing Corp. annually presents the award to the head coach of the nation's fastest relay teams. Tulane's women's Distance Medley Relay team recorded the fastest time in the nation this season (10:55.71) in winning the event at the Penn Relay Carnival on April 24. The 1999 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships will be held Wed.-Sat., June 2-5 in Boise, Idaho. The event is hosted by Boise State University. Preliminary heets for the 400 meters and 400-meter hurdles will be run on Wednesday, while the heets for the 1,500 meter runs are scheduled for Thursday.
