IRVING, Texas - Two Tulane track and field stars - juniors Christopher Arechiga and Joanna Lapucha - were named to the Conference USA All-Academic Team on Wednesday for their efforts on the oval and in the classroom, announced the league offices.
To be honored, student-athletes must hold a minimum 3.2 grade point average, have used a year of eligibility and have been a significant contributor to their team during the past season. The team consists of 11 men and 11 women, voted on by the conference sports information directors for the sport.
"I'm really proud of both Joanna and Chris for receiving this honor," said Tulane director of track and field Eric Peterson. "They both work extremely hard as student-athletes. To see student-athletes like Joanna and Chris to receive recognition for their achievements at a high level makes us all very proud of them, as well as the fact that they are representing Tulane and all that we stand for here."
Arechiga, a native of Long Beach, Calif., posted a GPA of 3.75 in the fall of 2012 while holding a cumulative GPA of 3.79. He is studying music and science technology on the Uptown campus. Arechiga has been a major component of Tulane's relay team this year. He - along with Albert Williams, Jon Frano and John Mouton - notched a season best in the 4 x 400 meter relay at the Conference USA Championships, finishing in 3:14.89. The mark was good enough for sixth place in school history. He was also on the 4 x 100 meter relay team that ran a 42.10 - an eighth place mark in school history - at the LSU Relays for a first place finish.
"They have both made really significant contributions to the growth and development of our track and field program, and I am really happy for the both of them," added Peterson.
