IRVING, Texas - Tulane track and field senior Joanna Lapucha was named to the Conference USA All-Academic Team for the second consecutive year on Wednesday for her efforts in the pole vault and in the classroom, announced the league offices.
To be honored, student-athletes must hold a minimum 3.2 grade point average, have used a year of eligibility and have been a significant contributor to their team during the past season. The team consists of 11 men and 11 women, voted on by the conference sports information directors for the sport.
Lapucha is the only two-time recipient on the women's team. Of the 22 total honorees, only three were named to the All-Academic squad for the second time in their careers.
"This is another great honor for Joanna to receive for being what I consider to be a model student-athlete," stated Tulane track and field director Eric Peterson. "She has worked so hard over the past four years to grow and develop as an athlete, and in addition to that, she has gotten everything out of her academic pursuits that she has hoped for. This honor is a testament to the level of commitment to excellence in all facets of her life."
Lapucha is wrapping up her track and field career quite nicely, as she set a new personal-best pole vault mark at the C-USA Outdoor Championships two weekends ago when she won the Bronze Medal on a 3.98 meter (13-0.75) leap. The medal was the third in her four C-USA Outdoor Championships, and the jump from this season ranks second in school history.
The tail end of her senior season has mirrored the end of her junior year, as the Lafayette, La., will compete in the NCAA East Regionals this weekend, just a few days after earning the C-USA All-Academic team honors. In 2013, Lapucha qualified for the NCAA East Regionals, as well, and with her qualification this season, she becomes the first two-time NCAA Regional qualifier in the pole vault for Tulane.
During the indoor campaign, Lapucha placed eighth in the pole vault at the C-USA Indoor Championships, vaulting 3.75 meters (12-3.5) and doubling as her top mark on the season.
In the classroom, Lapucha has maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.92. She is studying chemistry and is a four-time recipient of the Conference USA Commissioner's Honor Roll while also earned the C-USA Academic Medal during her freshman, junior and senior seasons.
