MILWAUKEE, Wis. - The Tulane track and field team earned two individual event titles on the opening day of the 1999 Conference USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Milwaukee, as Catherine Betz and Nathan Junius swept the javelin competition.

Freshman Catherine Betz set Conference USA Championship and Shimek Track records in winning the women's javelin. The Metairie, La., native recorded a mark of 148 feet, one inch, to outdistance Louisville's Trish Young by three inches. Betz earned first team all-Conference USA honors with the win.

Nathan Junius, a sophomore from New Orleans, won the men's javelin with a throw of 207 feet, three inches to top a field of nine. His effort was nearly seven feet better than his nearest competitor. Junius earned first team all-Conference USA honors as well. Junius' brother Will was also a Conference USA champion in the same event back in 1996.

After the opening day of competition, the Green Wave men are tied for third place with 10 points, while the women stand in fifth place also with 10 points.

The 1999 Conference USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships continue through Saturday. The event is hosted by Marquette University.
